Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
DD is 6 days old. DH keeps asking me "is this normal for her to be sleeping this much?" I tell him yes. She has literally been asleep since 9am. We have tried EVERYTHING to wake her up and nothing works. She wakes to eat and that is it and even then her eyes are still really closed.
We are trying to avoid a repeat of last night (up ALL night) but there is really no way to keep this kid up during the day!!
eta: we even have our yorkie barking in her face and DH was using a food processor right next to her and she didn't even flinch...
Any advice?? TIA!

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
my friend had the same issue with her daughter...she had to take all of her clothes off to wake her so she can set her on a schedule. i think she started it when the baby was about 1wk old

My DS was like this also in the beginning. I tried to keep the lights on and have noise (tv, conversation) and then keep it quiet at night.....after a few weeks he changed his pattern

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
This happened to me when DD first came home. She had her days and nights mixed up. She would sleep all day and then be up at night. After getting great advice from the ladies on here, I started a routine for the day time of eat, play than sleep. I would do anything to keep her up for a bit after her bottle. I would change her diaper after feeding or undress her which kept her up for a bit... Even if it's only 5 mins. That time will eventually get longer. At night I did a bedtime routine of Bath, Bottle, Book, Bed. When she woke to feed at night I didn't really talk to her and used a night light in her room to keep it dark. I would feed her and do quick diaper change and put her right back down. It took about a week but it did work.
Hope that helps. It def worked for me.

Ryan was like this in the beginning. He would only wake up to eat for the first couple of weeks, and would have his eyes closed most of the time. DH and I would look at each other and say "Hey, this parenting things isn't so hard after all!"

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
at 6 days they still have their days and nights mixed up! be patient, it works itself out. we found that having DAYTIME be loud, bright, TV on, etc... and NIGHTTIME to be quiet, dim lights, white noise... helped the differentiation happen.

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
Newborns are supposed to sleep something like 18-20 hours a day, so yes, it is normal.

My DS never had his days and nights mixed up...he always seemed to know which was which. Which is interesting because my DH works nights.

Not to alarm you but does she look yellow at all? My DD was extremely sleepy and it turned out that she was jaundice and that's what was making her that way. Just wanted to give you a heads up

she is a bit yellow, but she was tested for jaundice and she doesn't have it. we met with the ped today and he said it might help to put her in some sunlight so I walked around a bit outside with her. thanks for the heads-up though.

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
As long as she is eating I would not worry. Mine did not wake, even to eat. Just try and sleep when she does, if she is up at night, its tough, but pick a TV show and be up with her. (I got addicted to Little house on the prairie)
At the time, I thought nights were horrible...but looking back, I almost miss holding my little newborn in the middle of the night, just me and him.(and the ingalls)

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
the forst 2 weeks are pretty much thatway, waket to eat, but that is it, as long as she is eating you are doing great.Keep thehousedimly lit,it will helpto wake her up, if itis too sunny it will force herto close her eyes. Also, keep a cool wash cloth nearby andwipe the backof her neck befirea feeding,ti will help to wake her.

I agree- we didn't have problems with day/night reversals, but getting her to be awake to bf was SO hard- we'd undress her, press cold wet washcloths on her, and she'd sleep through all of it! Now she is 3 months and won't nap.

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
Basically all I have to say is ENJOY IT NOW! Megan slept ALL THE TIME, it was amazing. I truly didnt have a hard time at all with her. I felt the same way, this parenting thing isnt that bad. My mom used to worry me saying she slept way too much.
Well shes 10 months old now and she NEVER NAPS! She sleeps well at night but during the day, forget about it. I cant believe its the same kid! So..just enjoy it, and recover. It changes fast!

As long as she is eating, going through diapers & gaining weight, I wouldn't worry about it.
I wouldn't let her sleep through a feeding at this stage.

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
She will wake up when she's hungry. Some will say wake them to feed them, I never did that with my first because I felt if she was hungry, she would let me know. She often would sleep 4-5 hours between feedings instead of 3-4, but once she was hungry she let me know it!! (bottlefed) She was gaining weight steadily so the dr. never knew the difference.
4 weeks in, DS is now up more than he was 3 weeks ago. They also don't like the brightness of the day/lights too much at first....try keeping the blinds closed, the lights dim and the noise down and you might find you see her eyes more! I figured this out with my first in the hospital and so with my second, I kept the hospital room dim from the start.

Re: Is this normal??? Baby sleeping ALL day
my baby slept ALL THE TIME for like the first 3 or 4 weeks. I mean, she would wake up to eat and then go right back to sleep, this continued ALL day and night long...it is totally normal

I agree with not letting her sleep through a feeding at this age....my doctor told me that I HAD to feed Mikayla every 3-4 hours as she was not gaining weight in the beginning. She left the hospital at 8lb, 12 ozs on a Friday and then by Monday, she was down to 8lb, 11oz....the doctor told me I needed to make sure she ate on time....when she went back at 1 month, she weighed 9lb, 12 oz so the doctor said I could let her sleep and she would wake up when she is hungry.

definitely don't let her sleep through feedings (at least not for the 1st few weeks), her blood sugars could drop too low and that is dangerous for a newborn every 4 hrs she should be up and eating
