Is this the latest thing for school b-days...?
A little girl in Katherine's class just celebrated her 3rd b-day last week and she gave out gift bags to all of the children in the class. The bag included a coloring book, 2 puzzles (of 50 mini pieces each...I won't even get into that ) , kisses and candy necklace, bracelet and ring.
I asked one of my friends and she said all of the kids do this in her DD's school as well...in addition to the cupcakes. I can see the gift bags for a home party, but am I behind the times here?

At the twins elementary school you arent allowed to do ANYTHING for the birthdays beyond Kindergarten. The rationale is that some parents just cant afford to go all out like that and they dont want those kids to feel bad.

I think that's a great policy. It makes me SO sad that some kids would feel bad about something like that.

I agree.
It also prevents some parents from just trying to outdo each other and it prevents kids from having silly arguments over who did the most for their birthdays.

Thankfully at our nursery school this hasn't happened. The parents bring in muchkins or cupcakes to celebrate.

At my school, the kids bring in goody bags for bdays & for holidays (halloween, christmas etc.) but its expected in Pre-K. Last year I taught 4th & some kids STILL brought in goody bags for bdays.

We just bring in cupcakes and they are all usually invited to her B-day party itself. There are only 14 of them.

Re: Is this the latest thing for school b-days...?
I wish the school that I work in would adopt a policy like that. We recently had a 3rd grader's birthday and his mom took ice cream order for Baskin Robbins from every child. Then the teacher had to sit there figuring out the flavors and who ordered what....it was nuts! The teacher even had to top the ice creams.....a 5 minute birthday celebration easily turned into a full period. We'll definitely get some parents trying to top that one.

My son comes home with a goody bag for every occasion. So far, for b-day parties, they've only had stuff in school and no goody bags brought home.

Re: Is this the latest thing for school b-days...?
I CRINGE when my kids come home with goody bags... it seems to be every other day! Birthdays, holidays - whateverdays. I don't mind the little toys - but the CANDY! It makes me nuts that they come home with so much junk!!
I will say that although our district doesn't have an official 'policy' about goody bags - my 1st grader doesn't bring home too much junk any more. My pre-K son is CONSTANTLY loaded up. In fact today he brought home chopsticks and some candy for Chinese New Year.
And Valentine's Day is next week...

Re: Is this the latest thing for school b-days...?
yes very common...but not everyone does it. I had parents who would bring everything from McDonald's, cakes and party bags and parents would did not do anything and that was fine.
I don't think the kids felt like they had to compete (maybe the parents do)...they were just excited to have a party in school.
