I have a degree in early child dev. that curriculum is not dev. age appropriate. When I went to look for preschool for my dd I had to search high and low to find one that actually had developmental appropriate curriculum. So many school are common core aligned or they are ditto focused. Children should not being doing hand writing at age 3. I think its way too much for a 3 year old.

Completely agree with all of this! Learning through play should be the focus at this age.

Completely developmentally inappropriate.

IMO no its not too young. They are just giving suggesting on working on it at home....its not like they fail if they don't know the words.

My DS is in daycare 5 days a week 10hrs a day. I pay for them to teach not just watch and play with him. My DS started a journal in his 3 yo room (he was only 2.5 at the time) and its great to see the progression they make. Now he is in the PreK room and he can write and is working on reading (very basic).

IMO its never to young to start this. As for the behavior its normal. All kids have off days. My DS's teacher told me he had bad listening weeks etc. I would just talk to him and remind him of behavior things.

I disagree. What the OP described is developmentally inappropriate for a three year old. And there is a risk of putting pressure on the child, making him/her not enjoy school, acting out behavior if you demand they do things that are beyond their capabilities. I am in the field.

Ok we disagree. There are plenty of places that seem to follow this approach. I personally am glad my DS goes to a daycare/school that is proactive with it. There is no pressure and we put zero on him.

Thing is, it's not really an opinion thing. Developmental appropriateness is based on loads of research. There's a reason certain things are taught at certain ages. Children are cognitively and physically capable of doing things at different ages. When we push them too early, that can be a problem. At 3, children should be developing their fine motor skills through play-based activities like playdoh and coloring. They are NOT ready to be writing letters.

Yes, exactly what I was going to respond.

I have a doctorate degree in child psychology, so I am giving a qualified judgement here. These kind of demands, while unfortunately common in preschools and day care centers, are developmentally inappropriate and potentially detrimental to young children. As the pp stated, this is RESEARCH based, not just an opinion.

And yes, I would pull my child out of that program if that is truly the way it is. I would not want my three year old exposed to that. They should be playing, socializing, learning to properly hold a crayon, learning their colors and shapes at this age.

Ita! I think it's very hard to find daycare/preschools that know what dap is. Like I stated earlier I had to look high and low and take my dd to school 20 mins away from where we live because I did not want my 3 year old doing dittos. I went to one school and asked about dittos and the director was so enthusiastic to show me a huge stack of handwriting and math sheets the kids do. I honestly think teachers think they are doing right by children when it really is not appropriate. Children learn through play and that is what they should be doing.

Re: Is this too much for a 3 year old?

There are developmental norms for acquisition of motor skills which include design copying skills. Design copying is a prerequisite to letter writing. When children are pushed too soon to write they develop very bad habits that are next to impossible to undo. Motor planning and "muscle memory" ingrain motor movement into our nervous system. It allows for automaticy. By the age of 3yrs. A child should be able to imitate and copy vertical lines, horizontal lines, a circle and intersecting lines (a cross). That is it. Many 3 year olds can be taught to write their name in uppercase letters as well, but not all 3 year olds can. Lowercase letters are very difficult and 3 yr olds should not be required to write them. Letter Formation becomes very habitual quickly. Why introduce it so early and risk ingraining crappy skills? They should be working on a strong solid foundation for fine motor, visual motor and visual perceptual skills along with hand strengthening in preparation for future writing. Now is the time to do that. Letter writing comes later. Also drawing squares is a 4 year old skill and diagonal lines/triangles are a 5 1/2 year old skill. While *some* kids can do it, most can not. I would be infuriated if my 3 yr was expected to sit through developmental inappropriate activities and then on top of it the teacher was complaining about their behavior.

I think it sounds like they are going overboard for 3 years old. It also sounds like a lot to ask of busy working parents of TODDLERS!

But none of the home work is mandatory. It's just hey parents this is what we are working on so you can point out letters etc at home.

I think people saying wow pull out of that daycare is a bit overboard. I think a conversation with the teacher is needed.

You can't just go by the report because of you looked at my DS daily report you would think he's in an Ivy league school but in reality the learning that everyone says is too much is a small portion of the day.

All the big chain centers are run similar to this.

I didn't get to speak with director. DH has no problems with it and I did casually discuss with the teacher. The HW isn't a requirement. It's suggested to go over it
Today I had DD sit down with DS and I at his HW time. She did a few letters and then walked away. I didn't push it (and won't yet). There is a word board in the class that goes along with a story they are reading - that they read each day and point out the words.

Will I pull her out? No
Am I going to push her now & make her do the HW? No

She is VERY strong willed (and a typical 3 yr old) - so this is one of those "pick my battles" situations.
Thanks for the responses.

Re: Is this too much for a 3 year old?

There was a trend to "academic" preschools. And in fact, this has caused much harm to children in their later schooling. Many preschools, daycares, etc. are going back to play based learning. Yes you are paying a lot for care, but children learn the most though play based activities. They can be structured play, and their can include lots of fine motor activities (play dough, beads, hammering golf tees, etc., ) but it shouldn't be so focused on the academics.

ETA: My son did start "homework" at 3 1/2. It was to cut out pictures from magazines that started with a certain letter and glue them on an outline of the letter. This was great for him because it was once a week only, and he knew his letters and sounds, but needed the practice with scissors.

Writing, recognizing etc...all of that aside...those are HUGE words for a young kid...let alone a 3 year old?? Maybe if the words were something like NAP, NICE, NOT etc it would be a little more understandable.

Just because that's what your school is doing doesn't mean it's appropriate based on the most current research. And yes, some children will succeed regardless. But others will fall behind due to being pushed too soon.

Re: Is this too much for a 3 year old?

My daycare has mixed rooms of 3 and 4 year olds. They generally learn the same content, but there are different expectations and things that each child/age group works on. They do the letter of the week, talk about words that start with the letter and trace and/or write the letters both with their hand in the air and on paper.

My 3 year old is quite good at figuring out the first letter of a word, but that seems to be something that interests him. I didn't know he could write his name until he drew it on a table. Chat Icon Chat Icon I wouldn't normally expect a 3 year old to be able to do this.

There's nothing wrong with introducing letters, tracing, writing, etc, but I'd be a little concerned about the expectations. There's no way a 3 year old should be expected to recognize words especially long ones. I also don't think it's necessary to do any type of homework, even if voluntary, at this age.
