is your school this incompetent?! (long)
We're only back at school 2 weeks and my school has already run out of copy paper!! We can't make copies ourselevs (even if we buy our own paper, which we shouldn't have to do) because there is no machine available for the teachers to use. This might not be so bad if we had any learning/ teaching materials to use. Our school stil hasn't even received our math workbooks!! Even when there was paper I didnt get my copies back until 3 days after I needed them and I planned well in advance! So obviously we can't give math homework now. I can barely teach reading because there is no reading materials to use. Teachers have to bring in their own teaching materials and copy them. For example, this month is folk literature but the school supplies not one thing for teacgers to use in this area. The "skill of the week" is predicting, and main idea. the school also provides no material for this. No problem, I have bought many books in which I can copy handouts on this topic - xcept now no copies.
God forbid us teachers were this unprepared we'd be crucified for it. Tell me how am I supposed to do my job when they cant do theirs?!
o yeah one more thing. Wednesday a student 4th grade left school without permission 2:40 instead of 3:30) I called down to AP and said I was going to call home right then on cell but had no number. He said: the number is downstairs(office) i said: i'm with my class you should probably call just in case something happens to him on the way home. he said - get this-: "call when you leave work today" i said: isn't that too late? besides it was holiday and i had no time he laughed and did nothing
Is all this sounding insane to you?
sorry so long. had to get this off my chest

I can sympathize with the paper issue. My school "Forgot" to order paper so we have none and even if they did order it, none of the copy machines work!

It has to be NYC no other place would do this!
I don't have math wbs for 4 of my kids and it is my responsiblity to make copies NOT the math coach....not sure what he is doing...oh and he has a copier in his room!
The copier is supposed to be only for the admin and teacher aide to use. The teacher aide is supposed to make copies for us but doesn't anymore....so the teachers has just started doing the copies themselves. We refuse to pay $$$ at Staples to do it!
I totally understand where you are coming from!

I ask b/c we can't make copies either. How does a school run without paper?

Re: is your school this incompetent?! (long)
I had a similar experience in my first school- we had NOTHING. Then I went to another school in the same community, Title 1 with roughly the same # of kids, so the funding would be similar. And my second (and current) school had EVERYTHING- books, art supplies for all the teachers, paper, copies, you name it. I had to buy chalk in my first school.
My point is- I'd be curious about your school's budget and where that money is going. I suspect a few people of robbing my first school blind (and a few others shared my suspicions). We could never prove anything. I wish I'd made an anon call to the Daily News or something because I am surprised that you lack so much.

Sounds kinda like the school I worked at. That's one of the reasons I'm no longer teaching
I'm sorry you have to deal with such incompetence - as a teacher, you already have more than enough to worry every day, without the added stress of things going wrong that are beyond yor control

I'm assuming you at least have books to work with. Why do they think teachers cant work copy machines? they'd save a ton of money with the FIVE people they hire to make cpies for us. Today it got worse - they somehow found a ton a paper for memos!
Any of you teachers have an old set of 4th grade basal readers in your school that they are willing to donate? I'm desperate!!

I'm so sorry that a school like that turned you off teaching. Believe me I understand. I'm almost at that point What are you doing now?

Re: is your school this incompetent?! (long)
Yeah, it's kinda sad that I worked so hard and went to school for so long, and now I'm not even doing it anymore. But I may go back to teaching eventually - that's the nice thing about it, as long as I keep my license current, I can always try again sometime.
For now I needed a break though, so I took the first opportunity that presented itself, and I'm working in an office, processing contracts for the government. It's a huge change of pace, but they matched my salary and I work in a supportive, positive environment with people who appreciate it when I do a good job (and let me know that!). It's much better for my health, because I'm so much less anxiety-ridden.
