It is for real...
yesterday I saw on ad on craigslist in the free section for someone giving away plants. Bulbs, trees, hostas-dig them up yourself.
So I call & arrange to go to the woman's house. Turns out she doesn't live there anymore because the house is now in foreclosure & for sale.
The house was adorable & well kept in an average area, the woman was a lovely young mother of two adorable kids & she is an avid gardener & wanted her plants to go to good homes.
I have no idea what the details are, but holy crap, how friggin sad.
I couldn't help but look, the house is on MLSLI for $389....that means they either overpaid OR refied to the max.
Yesterday I heard a quick blurb on NEWS12 that the state is trying to come up with a foreclosure task force because right now there are 8,000 homes in Nassau & 10,000 in Suffolk in some sort of foreclosure proceedings. The numbers are even higher in Queens & brooklyn according to an article I read online.
The scary part is that more of those teaser rate loans were written in 06 then any other year, so those haven't even reset yet. Everyone's home values will be affected if this happens like the "experts" say it will, coupled with the folding subprime lending industry there will be tons of homes for sale and very few qualified buyers.
My advice is don't spend your equity unless its an emergency & hold on tight because its going to be a hell of a ride.

I agree. It's so sad what's happening. However..... like you said don't spend it unless absoutely necessary. It must of been for them??? The rate of forclosure here is through the roof!
on a side note: way to go on getting FREE plants!

Such a score, I got about ten hostas at least 30 or 40 spring bulbs, 2 hydragea bushes, a couple of small evergreen trees, shasta daisies, ornamental grasses.
She had so much stuff, there was another woman there taking stuff, she was like a vulture she got way more than me!

wow- that's scary- and that fact that they didn't even adjust yet is scarier
your house in NOT an ATM machine
do not roll your car payment and credit card debt in to your house- I don't care what the commericals say- it's not a good idea (you will be paying for your car for 30 years- I doubt you will still be driving it then)
I tried to tell my brother this - but he wouldn't listen- he is going to be in BIG trouble down in FL- and I am so happy my Dad didn't cosign

kelly on a side note: i thought of you yesterday. Lauren and I went to see Dora and Diego, but outside of the area in the park was a lady that was face paiting... We were in line and another lady commented on her prices. the artists said ' I have to feed my chickens'
