Italy in July/August?
Am I crazy? If you had the chance to go on a cruise in July or August, would you? Or would the weather make it SO unbearable that you wouldn't enjoy the trip at all? TIA!

Re: Italy in July/August?
hey Jenn!
DH and I were there for 3 weeks this past summer. Granted, his family has a house there and we didn't take the "tourist" approach, but the summer was great! I think it depends on where you're going. if you're going to be in the south if Italy, it will be VERY hot... we were in the north in themountains so it was nice and cool. In fact, many southern Italians vacation up there in the summer because it is so hot. I've heard Rome is almost unbearable in the summer because of the heat.
Touristy areas will still be open even though the whole country has a month off in August.... More rural and remote areas will be much more quiet.
In August we did a little sight-seeing. We stayed in the north, however. We went to Florence, Padua, Venice and Assisi (which was the farthest south we went).
FM if you need info.

I don't think I'd ever pass up the opportunity to go to Italy.

Re: Italy in July/August?
I was in Italy for 3 full weeks in August several years ago. Yes some things in some of the smaller cities were closed. But, all the tourist areas and attractions were open. There were tons of people there and plenty to see. Yes it was very hot, but we got through it and some days were better than others. If that is the only time you could go then I wouldn't pass up the opportunity.

Re: Italy in July/August?
we took a tour in july last year. the first week was bearable at 85 degrees or so. the second week was unbearable at 100 degrees or so!!!!! be prepared to take breaks from the heat in the shade. our day in pompeii walking around in the sun was kind of hard to enjoy. i guess i would only go in july again if there was no other time i could go (which was our case last year).

Re: Italy in July/August?
We did a European hm cruise in July in 06...the middle-end of July...for the most part it wasn't too bad...Rome was about 90 & then Naples was the same. YET when we got to Venice, it was 98-100, it was the hottest recorded temp in 17 years...it truly was unbearable..we didn't even feel like walking around. It kind of put a damper on the city/us. Yet from there we did Florence and Sicily & it was still in the 90's but bearable.
