Re: It's officially summer!
Can’t wait for fall. When there is very little A/C anywhere, summer gets old real quick (the beginning is OK). There is just not a lot of places to escape the heat. You might get lucky and get a bus or train with A/C, but that happens 50% of the time. I find myself spending extra time in the grocery store hanging out by the dairy and freezers just reading all the labels.
As someone who does not react well at all with the heat, I hate summer. I just had my first dizzy spell today as it was so hot here today.
I hope it’s not one of those weird summers here with a lot of heatwaves and where people die because no one has fücking A/C.

Are AC units just not readily available? I understand that maybe central air wouldn't be big, but why don't people buy window or wall units? Or is that not a thing there? That sounds awful- and I LOVE the heat. But only to a point!

Happy summer everybody! I love the long days and the lack of homework and kid schlepping. We try to go to the beach--weather permitting--on the summer solstice and watch the sun go down.

Can't speak for Germany, but in Italy it's uncommon for private residences to have AC units. The units themselves are expensive, the utility bill would be astronomical, and even if those things were affordable the power grid isn't set up for everyone running ACs. You can barely run a blow dryer without causing a power outage lol. So not a lot of people have them, and they suffer through insane 100+ degree heatwaves we could never even imagine. So mostly commercial buildings have air conditioning. I imagine a lot of countries are similar. We're pretty spoiled.

Oh, you speak the truth! And you can't get ice there either! They think it will give you a stroke or something. Is ice readily available in Germany?

The walls are made of concrete here, for the most part. It’s great insulation, but it can only hold in cold air for so long. Putting in A/C would be very costly. Forget central air. It’s only in certain places. You won’t even get it in an office for the most part.
I’ve never seen a window A/C unit here. The windows are different and it just wouldn’t work. They do have stand alone A/C units, but those never work well.
What I do in the heat is close all the windows and put down the blinds (there are outdoor blinds here). When it finally gets dark,10-10.30 PM, then I open it all up and use fans to get cool air in. It just really sucks if it is a hot night. I just need to keep it as cool as possible because the insulation is so good. It also kind of sucks in September bc the heat is still left in the house/apartment and it takes about a month to cool it off. On the other side, because the insulation is so good, I save on heating costs.

Everything gives you a stroke in Italy! Going out with wet hair? You'll surely die. But turn on the blow dryer and the whole town is coming after you with pitch forks. lol

Nope to the ice. I know a few supermarkets that have it, so I go there when I need ice (when I go fishing I like to keep the fish on ice). They also have these little ice cube bags that you can use to make ice cubes. I’ve gotten used to the no ice cube thing.
However, a lot of people do not have a suitable freezer in their fridge. Since I’m American I sought out the biggest fridge I could with a full freezer. I have a second freezer as well. My BF just shakes his head at the way I have so much freezer and fridge space.
I think Italy has a lot more A/C than Germany. You can get it in restaurants and hotels mostly. It kind of isn’t the best, but better than nothing. In Germany you just sweat in hotels.

Yep same in Italy. Concrete walls, different windows, and outdoor blinds (love those things btw, wish they had them here). Except running the fan will probably kill you in Italy

LOL! The wet hair thing is common here, too. I don’t even do my hair in the summer. It’s just too hot. The Germans are strange with dressing for the seasons, I’ve noticed. It might be 80 degrees in April, so I’ll waltz out without a jacket and maybe a nice dress. Then I’ll get to the bus stop and I see people bundled up with a scarf because it’s April. Whatever, I just don’t care, but this has been my experience.

I see this in NY sometimes too though. It's like 80 degrees in Oct and they are walking around with the tall riding boots and the scarves because... FALL! I sweat looking at it. Or it's freezing in May and everyone is in sandals and flimsy dresses.

I know! Go sweat yourself into oblivion. Have fun with the makeup running down your (collective) face or whatever. I hope they brought deodorant.
