Re: Jewish Couples

We get together with each of our families once during the 8 nights, in order to celebrate together. Usually it's whenever the weekend falls out. We eat potato latkes and light the menorah. DH and I exchange gifts on a night other than the one we're getting gifts from our families, to spread it out more.

yup hes jewish Chat Icon see my mom is jewish, my dad was catholic, we always grew up practicing both religions--but neither of them were verry hardcore, lite a menorah, open gifts on xmas lol..alot of mix and match... once my dad passed away we still do xmas but lean more towards the jewish faith now...

since my boyfriend is jewish...we obviously wont be celebrating xmas, so im trying to embrace the jewish side alot more since that is what he believes Chat Icon

Re: Jewish Couples

On Hanukkah, we eat latkes (potatoe pancakes) with applesauce. It is an Israel tradition to also eat soofganeot- whcih are basically jelly donuts. Traditionally- people play with dreidels (but I don't know anyone over the age of 5 who does). There are some cute songs. We also light a menorah every night for 8 nights. The first night we light one. The second night we light 2, etc...There are also blessings you say when you light the candles.

ETA: There are so many temples on LI, that offer classes on torah and judaism for non relgious people to learn. If you are trying to embrace judaism, it may be a good idea to learn, not only the practices, but why we do them.

Re: Jewish Couples

our family always did the first night....big dinner with potato pancakes and grandma and grandpa always came with their mountain of presents.

Then with the step family, we'd do the same thing, first night (unless it was in the middle of the week) and then we did Christmas Eve.
