Jewish moms: when did/will you pick the Hebrew name?

Are we supposed to pick the Hebrew name before the baby is born or after? I don't know what I'm having, but I know who we will be honoring with the Hebrew name. My mom has the Hebrew names of those relatives, but since one is a male name and one is a female name, I assume I'll need variations of those names.

Who picks the actual Hebrew name? If we have a boy, does the mohel pick the name? If we have a girl, does the rabbi who is performing the naming ceremony choose the name? Sorry for all of the questions, but I have no idea how this works.

we picked the hebrew names, we're going with DH"s grandmother and my grandfather, so there was an obvious alteration to the male name...and as for a boy, I think you pick it and the mohel just "gives" it to the baby as a custom, but you definitely pick it and let the mohel know....

We picked ourselves: my son after my grandfather and my daughter after Dh's mom.

I actually posted a very similar question about a month back.

I personally decided to look for my own names- I knew who we were honoring, so I wanted to look for names with those initials.
