JFK Air Train

We are leaving NYC Friday afternoon between 3-4 to head to JFK for an evening flight to Las Vegas

What would you recommend? A cab or that air train to JFK?

We are thinking cab, but there may be alot of traffic on the LIE because of the holiday and it may be tough to even get a cab

does anyone know anything about the JFK Air Train -- is it reliable? Where do you pick it up? How much does it cost?

TIA

Re: JFK Air Train

I don't know how reliable it is. I've never been on it but you can pick it up at Jamaica. If you take the subway to the Jamaica stop then i'm sure you'll see signs for the Airtrain.

Re: JFK Air Train

if you are you leaving from NYC why don't you take one of those buses from Grand Central/Penn Station/ Port Authority? I think it's only about $12 per person, I've taken it before and it was fine. They run pretty frequently

Re: JFK Air Train

I took Air Train once.... I would ABSOLUTELY take it again. It is very convienient from the LIRR. Just follow the signs. I think it was only $5 on my MetroCard to get on. It was very reliable, it comes every 5-10 minutes.

If you are taking it from the LIRR from Penn- sit in the front of the train, that is where the escalator is. If you're taking it from the rest of the Island... sit in the back.

I pulled this fromthe website for you...

How long does it take to get to the airport?
A: Travel time between JFK and your location varies. Here are a few sample trips:

To or From the Airline Terminal Area - Duration
NY Penn Station via LIRR - 35 minutes
Most parts of NYC via subway - 60 minutes
New Hyde Park, Long Island via LIRR - 25 minutes
Huntington, Long Island via LIRR - 52 minutes
Ronkonkoma, Long Island via LIRR - 71 minutes

What does it cost to use AirTrain and where can I purchase a ticket?

A: Connecting to or from JFK with AirTrain costs $5 each way (children under 5 ride free). Payment is made at Howard Beach or Jamaica station using a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard. The MetroCard can be purchased at either station, at subway and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stations, and at MetroCard vendors throughout the airport and New York City. For more information, please see Cost & Tickets.

Re: JFK Air Train

If you end up taking the Air Train, please let me know what you think of it. We might take it to get to the airport for Disney. We have a 5am flight, so I'm nervous about taking it that late (or early). We'd be leaving our apartment at about 2:30am!!! We're nuts, I know.

Oh of course. I can't even imagine what it was like to be there. I work in midtown and I saw the smoke when we went outside.

I know i'm not the only one but right now i'm scared of getting on a plane.

We are traveling to JFK to fly to Las Vegas on Friday (maybe we'll see you there Chat Icon )

We are planning on taking the A subway to the Howard Beach stop, then hopping on the AirTran there. I have never taken it before, but have also heard good things about it. We thought we'd give it a try and save the $50 it would cost to take a cab. Good luck!

DH Says the same thing about those assclowns. He says that I am letting them win by letting them scare me from flying again.

He's right but I still am not ready and it's been 4 years now since that horrible day. How did it take you to get back on a plane?

funny enough, we were planning our honeymoon and we went to disneyworld in florida

i refused to fly so we were gonna book amtrak. Wouldn't you know that summer before the wedding, there were like 4 amtrak accidents. It was then that i realized that no matter what mode of transportation you take, there's always a risk. That and the fact that the train ride to FLA takes over 24 hours while the flight is only 2.

We took JetBlue which has the TV's. I watched TV the whole time and blocked out the fact that I was flying.

Excuse me, ETA - he does not get ******, he gets p i s s e d -- what ever happened to freedom of speech???????
