Job hunting STINKS!!!
I am soooo angry!!! You know the problems I'm having at daycare with the baby teachers and how many problems I've been having with my current job and how I HAVE to get out of here. Well, I've been looking for a P/T job so I can stay at home a few days out of the week. I interviewed with this small company and they advertised between x amount of $. Well, they called to offer me the job but I only applied for the position because they were flexible with the hours but they offered what I was looking for pay wise. Well, now all of a sudden they're only offering $2.00 less per hour? I said I was looking for the higher end amount of money considering my extensive experience and she said well, it's not in our budget??? ***? If it's not in your budget why did you advertise it? What would you do? I was so excited to be getting out of here and being home more with the kids but now this just killed it. I can still take the job and make less money and I'll at least get the he!! out of here. But it's so much farther to drive too so that's more money in gas. Do I take the job as it was offered and just keep looking for something else and then leave when something comes along? It's not going to be making enough for what I "need" for bills, but it's bringing a little more home than here and I get to be with the kids more? I don't know what to do. My gut says to leave my current job (I'm getting a bad vibe from them here), but my gut is also saying that this job I'm being offered isn't the right one for me either. I'm so confused. I definitely need more money than what they're offering so if I do take it it's definitely only temporary. Oh, also the job is 90 days temp with probably going permanent. (Yeah, we'll see!) What do you think? Thanks!

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
I would stay where you are until you find something that you think you are going to be happy with. Especially since it's further and that means more money for gas and gas is getting expensive!
Also, have you looked at the price of P/T daycare? It's almost as much as F/T care (at least that's what I've found).
Good luck :)

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
If it's not what you NEED to cover the bills then you can't take the job. I would call back and tell them what you expressed here. You were very excited about the job and would love to accept but can only do so within the salary parameters they originally stated so at this time you have to regrettably decline. You can say that should reconsider, you would love to accept for x per hour.

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
OK - first question would be...how much do you need your current income? Secondly, would your kids be in daycare if you took the new job? If they wouldn't be, then you would be saving the expense of the daycare bill so that would be a plus.
I am confused in your post...is the new job more pay than your current job? It seems as though you need to get out of your current work situation but I am not sure how good the new offer is considering it is only temp to perm. If they changed the payscale already, they may decide not to go perm at all and then you would be screwed? You have many questions to answer and I guess you alone should know what the best thing is for you to do at this time. Perhaps, wait it out and keep on the job search.

ITA. If they can't offer you what they were advertising, then don't take the job. Good luck!

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
Here's what we're trying to do...
The kids will no longer be in daycare as soon as I leave my job. I will be home with them 3- 2.5 days a week and my mom will watch them the other 2 days. She's already watching the baby 2 days a week since December.
Right now at my current job I only bring home $250 after paying for daycare for both kids. But I need to bring home more to cover bills and to have "extra" money if I switch to P/T work. This way I get to be home most of the time and I don't have to worry about the baby teachers I'm having problems with at daycare. Also, since I HATE my job and there's been nothing but problems here I can't wait to leave! I'm also getting a bad vibe from certain people. I also noticed someone was on my computer and in my files since I things are missing and to get in you can only log in with my password. I have absolutely nothing to hide and I personally don't care if they did, it's just the point of going on my computer? Anyway, the job being offered to me is offering $2.00 less than what I'm making and a lot farther of a drive and not as many hours as I was thinking it would be. With the smaller salary and longer drive it would probably be at least $150 less per month than I was hoping to be making P/T. I don't know! Part of me wants to take it just to get out of here until I find the right job and part of me is mad about the money because it wasn't what they were offering. Like I said I have a bad feeling that I might be getting fired soon. They also know that I'm not planning on sticking around because I already talked to them about going P/T considering the daycare issues. They wouldn't let me do that. Taking this other position would still be short of what I need but so is staying here. The woman I talked to also sounded clueless about what she wanted in a position. I interviewed with her but she sounded lost on the phone. She said things might change in the future, as far as hours, etc. I just don't know!!! Honestly I wish I could just leave my current job until I find what I need!

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
If you think they are going to fire you, just let them. At least that way you can collect unemployment (unless you were fired for gross misconduct) while looking for something.

That's what I was going to say. At least if you're fired you have a little income from unemployment helping you out vs. starting another job you're going to hate. Try and stick it out the right job will come along for you.

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
You can't take the job because it does not fit into your plan. It's rough to do the math because you know what you NEED which is very hard to find.
Many places won't hire you for less than 24-32 hours a week so it can be dificult. Keep your eye out in the Pennysavers and also sign up with agencies, they bill the most.
Good luck.

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
You know how I mentioned that I had a bad feeling... well, I "heard through the grapevine" (good friend here) that my job is on the line and that I'm probably going to get fired soon. After being here for over 2.5 years. The thing is that I can't let them fire me because I'm looking for a 3rd shift office job here at Duke. If I get fired of course that looks HORRIBLE but I will never be able to work at any Duke office again. I can't risk that right now. As much as I hate my office, Duke has GREAT benefits. A lot cheaper than at UNC where my DH works. I don't know what to do??? My gut is saying you better put in your 2 weeks notice. My stomach won't stop hurting from all the stress from being here.

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
Since now I'm probably losing my job, I might have to take the crappy job until I find something else. It's better than nothing.
My one question is do you think it's risking that job opportunity if I ask her if she'll give me $1 more per hour??? Or is it not even worth it, that I'll probably lose the job and she'll give it to someone else? Thanks! This is so hard! I've never "negotiated" before, but this lady sounds like a twit!

Re: Job hunting STINKS!!!
It sounds like you are trying to give yourself an excuse to quit when in your head you know it not your best option right now.
Things to consider: If you stick it out where you are until you find the right PT opportunity you will continue to receive the "great benefits" and your full time compensation.
If you are fired for other than cause you will most likely be eligible for Unemployment and benefit continuation under COBRA. You may not be eligible for re employment at Duke but what sort of reference will you get if you quit? I would not take the possibility of a PT position at Duke into consideration at this point.
If you quit and take the PT position you will have a longer more expensive commute and less compensation with no guarantee that the position will turn perm. Since they are already talking about budget issues I would not count on this position turning perm. Will you be eligible for any benefits in this new position?
Didnt your DH just start a new job? I would also consider the stability of his employment since it is a new situation.
Last thought - If you can save money in your current situation you could give yourself a time limit at the current position. For example - stick it out for x more months tops, do the best job you can during that time(for future references) and save as much money as possible during this time period. If you have not found the right part time position by the end of the time period hand in your resignation and use you savings to supplement your expenses.
