Job ideas for down the road......
Let me start off by saying I am happy doing what I am doing for the time being, but I am seriously considering making the transition from social work in the next 2 years.
It's basically the bureacracy of the system and the powers that be that drive me nuts---not the clients and their complex problems.
I just don't know WHAT I am qualified to do otherwise, that will pay me at least $50K a year to do it, without having to work over 50+ hours a week, or commute to the city daily.
I have been working in the human services field for 10 years now.
Thoughts? Ideas?

Are you qualified to work as a school social worker? The school system is a great gig in terms of the hours/time off, and the pay is pretty good. If I did that, I'd probably then go into admin. and become asst. principal/principal/superintendant, etc. There's lots of room to grow. A good friend of mine who is now an asst superintendant started off as a school social worker.

As a school social worker, I agree with everything the PP said.
However, going into the school system will not get you away from the "powers that be" or administration.
I love School social work, b.c the role is so varied from day to day, hour to hour. It def keeps you on your toes.

No, I'm not qualified to be a school social worker. Most of my experience over the past 10 years is not with kids either, so I don't imagine it would be very easy to make that kind of cross-over.
I'm not sure just switching populations is the answer for me..............

I don't know what to tell you, but I have a bunch of friends with their MSW who are in the same boat! One is going back for a Master of Library Science. It's hard, because you have a lot of experience, but without it directly translating to another field you may have a hard time starting as anything other than entry-level.

Re: Job ideas for down the road......
Well, for now, I am going to stick it out. I got my job to give me access to the server on my laptop today so now I can work from home/the field more and stay clear somewhat from the bureacratic BS that goes on when people have direct access to me at the office every day.
Spending more money to go back to school is just not an option for me. I already owe way too much in student loans even though a Master's in Library Science sounds pretty cool!!
