Jobs for people who have a narrow field of experience
My sister has been unemployed for several months. Most of the jobs she has worked in the past have been customer service related, something I know she doesn't want to go back to.
Her undergrad degree (music studies) is of no help to her.
She could go to school for her master's degree but still needs to get a job to pay her bills.
Where should she be applying? She was working with Adecco but the few interviews she's been on haven't panned out.

What about administrative assistant type jobs? You mostly need computer, communication and organization skills and a good head on your shoulders.

What about something like a group home? They tend to hire people with little experience. Hours are usually flexible and benefits are decent.

Not sure how much your sister needs to make to pay the bills but what about a job in a music store or someplace for "the arts"? For example, the Stony Brook Staller Center.
Another idea is to get a job that will help her once she has her Masters. For example, if she is getting her Masters in Marketing perhaps a job at a local ad agency to be paid while getting strong training and building a foundation of experience.
Tell us more and maybe we can offer some ideas that would make more sense for her background and where she is heading.

Re: Jobs for people who have a narrow field of experience
I hear ya... and her! My job experience is so narrow (sponsored search listings) or so long ago (working with kids, copy editing)that I am not really qualified for anything. I am a PT AA now and haaaate it, but its a job.
I have a BA in Liberal Arts, from 8 years ago, what a useless degree. Looking for a FT job but will probably have to go for another AA job.
It totally sucks feeling like you should be in a certain place in a career (and were before the recession) but being stuck in an entry level job you hate with no way out. (I would love to get a masters but could never afford it)
Sorry to take over your thread! ut i feel her pain. I don't have much help to offer. Maybe she can get an aa type job at a music company or office? To at least get in the door?

I am fairly sure she is interested in graphic design. She took a few local courses recently, but I am not sure why she stopped.
My parents are still supporting her so she's not really motivated to find a job. She might be interested in something music related still... that' a great suggestion, thanks

Re: Jobs for people who have a narrow field of experience
good luck to her You are a good sister.
If she likes the "graphic design" field she should try a local small agency. The pay may be small but the experience will be really valuable on so many fronts.
Also, I know some LI companies have in-house art studios that could be considered too -- for example CA Technologies, Stony Brook University, Cablevision and TransFirst.
On the agency front depending on where she lives she can look at Cameron Advertising in Hauppauge or Dircks Associates in Saint James.
Hope this helps!

Perhaps look for an "entry level" position at a company that will pay for your Masters. I know that companies like Canon, CA Technologies and Home Depot do this. In fact some bring in local colleges to the office so you can get an accelerated program, etc.
Good luck to you!
