Jon & Kate Gosselin Under Investigation for Violating Child Labor Laws
The scandal continues for Jon and Kate Gosselin.
On Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine if the hit TLC show Jon & Kate Plus 8 is violating child labor laws after receiving a complaint against the show.
"We're not saying that they are not complying with child labor laws. We're investigating a complaint," Troy Thompson of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor tells Usmagazine.com. "We're not saying that there was or was not a violation, just that we're conducting an investigation."
TLC says it "fully complies" with state laws and regulations.

The reality show -- for which Jon and Kate earn $50,000-$75,000 an episode -- features their eight children, including 8-year-old twins and sextuplets who just turned 5. (Monday's season five premiere drew a record 9.8 million viewers.)
Being on the show means the kids might be exempt from standards such as how many hours they can work per day. Ellen Dannin, law professor at Penn State Dickinson School of Law, tells Us: "It's not like acting. They're just going about their regular lives."

Earlier this week, Kate's brother and sister-in-law said they fear the emotional toll the show is taking on the children.
"They're being viewed as a commodity," Kevin Kreider, Kate's younger brother, said on CBS' Early Show Wednesday.
Added his wife Jodi, "They're being exploited, and it's time for America to see the situation for what it really is."

Despite Kate's claims, Jodi said the kids do not like the cameramen in their home all the time.
"They don't want the cameras around. They have told me personally," said Jodi. "They would say, 'Aunt Jodi, I don't like the cameras on every vacation with us.'"

"Kids have bad moments, and they cry," Jodi added. "Having a camera zoom in on a crying child... this should not be a form of entertainment."

it seems to me that her brother and his wife have conveniently become anti- jon and kate since the gosselins moved away... and they (the brother and wife) aren't on the show like before... just my take on it.

It actually started before that...
Supposedly, Kate didn't want them being paid to be on the show (didn't want to mix family/business) so she put an end to it.
I don't think I believe that part of it...but who knows.

After watching the episode where Jodi & Kevin watched all 8 kids (and they have 4? of their own!) because Jon & Kate went to LA for HAIR PLUGS...when most of the kids had the flu, I stopped watching. If you really have your childrens needs first, you wouldnt leave them to get free hair plugs when they are sick.
The story is that TLC approached Jodi to get paid, since she was on the show alot (that is when Kate & Jon started going on all these trips) and Kate said no way was anyone else to get paid (which I believe)
And notice that Beth & Bob disappeared, and any new "nanny" doesnt get filmed. hmmmm..
There is an earlier episode where Jon takes Kate shopping and pics out her clothes because she HATED shopping - well look at her now

Jodi and Kevin were HUGE parts of the kids lives for a large part of the show.
They watched the kids when Kate and Jon started taking ONE kid out for an episode (in addition to her own 3 or 4 kids), Jodi flew in for ONE day at the END of that Colorado snowboarding trip "help" the brood get home, and countless other times. Kevin helped them sheetrock and paint the upstairs for the kids when they switched rooms and the hang stuff in the garage in an even earlier episode. They even took the kids while Kate and Jon flew to Florida for his 30th birthday present--and were at Hibachi when she surprised him with the trip.
I think that they feel helpless. Do I agree? Not necessarily. But when I watched the Early Show clip, they were sitting on the couch and looked so uncomfortable...Jodi was practically buried into Kevin. Kate and Jon have cut off everyone else in the family...who else is protecting those kids??
And it's true...Kate even says that this is "work" that shoot days are "work" That's a LOT of hours and child labor laws are SUPER, SUPER strict.

I don't watch the show except for seeing 5 or 10 minutes of it a couple of times, but I have sort of been following the story. One of the things that jumped out at me today or yesterday was that I read that the # of episodes is doubled this season - they went from 20 episodes to 40 episodes. If they are getting at least $50k an episode, that's an increase of a million dollars gross. Sorry, but this screams greed and exploitation to me.
I feel badly for the kids and if it were my sister, I might be talking to the press too, if I thought it might help the kids.

Ugh, I don't know. It does appear the Brother & SIL are sincere, but come on...to take it to the public?? That, to me, is just WRONG. And they've been ALL over talking about it.
The way I see it-- parents make all kinds of choices FOR their kids, some that people feel are right/wrong. Fast food 3x day for meals, smoking around them, TV 24/7, not disciplining them, never sending them outside to play, there are lots more that people have strong stands on either way....but are any of those less bad than having cameras in their house filming the kids? And filming them to BETTER their future-- college, other economic help that parents of 8 likely wouldn't be able to offer their growing/grown children?
Not a choice I'd make, but I do genuinely believe that they do the filming because it is FOR the kids in the long run-- of course I have no idea, but it's JMO.

I don't think Kate and Jon greedy at all.
I think it was pretty responsible of them to take advantage of all of that income to provide for such a large family. They would have been the states problem otherwise.
I think TLC got greedy - every episode became a commerical. They used the whole family for ratings - but it is a business and they have a great product now. You don't see this much hype around all the dwarf shows they produce. (as a side note... do we really need so many dwarf shows???)
As for the kids being troubled by all the cameras on vacations... all I have to say is that I'm in my 30's and I've never been skiing in Utah or to Hawaii, and I don't live in a $1.5 million home. I have trouble feeling sorry for that bunch of kids.

I am surprised that the department of labor hasn't investigated them sooner. I know there are many groups out there who have called for it because they believe the kids are being exploited. It is a very gray area because the kids aren't acting so they aren't technically "working". I personally think it is wrong to have cameras in your home several days a week filming the most private and personal moments of your children who do not have a choice in the matter. I could see doing TV specials, writing books, etc. just to make money to support such a large family. But filming my kids for public entertainment several days a week seems exploitative to me. It was their choice to have this large family and I don't necessarily think that they should be excused from exploiting the kids because they need the money to raise them.

ok now i think that everything is going to far!!!! i love jon and kate and they are in a horrible situation. this is too much!!!!! i understand that everyone is concerned about the kids but honestly i think they are doing just fine. they aren't neglectful parents and i think if they thought it would harm the children they would totally stop!!

My .02 is if it was a man (jon) that was doing what Kate is to support the family it wouldn't be scrutinized like it is.
No one can ever convince me that women are treated as equals in the business world today.
ETA: I in no way think they are violating any child labor laws.
Kate is doing what needs to be done to suport the family. Jon is not that driven personality. I raised 7 children and a grandson. It's because she's a female that she gets crap. My XH was and still is not the type that does what it takes to support a family. I had to take charge and be realistic and made sure my famiy had what we needed. I also get the BYTCH type attitude vibes from MALE persons because I can provide and do well .
Also I am not a bytch and my XH is totally included in my DD's wedding and I never received one dime of child support,Cars,College tuition or help with both the wedding 's of my DD's 7 months apart.
What a reality show my life would have been...
