So silly. Kids don't drive to McDonald's by themselves. If people don't want to eat McDonalds, don't eat it!

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
I agree that Ronald McDonald doesn't encourage kids to eat bad, that it's the parents who bring them there. With that said, I wish there were better cheap, fast food alternatives. Before my mom got remarried, I was 8 and my sister was 2 and my mom worked 3 jobs and was broke. We went to McDonalds a lot because it was cheap and real fast in between jobs. I'll admit, it's TOUGH trying to break the "fast food addiction" having had it a lot growing up it's hard to break the habit.
I don't understand why they can't have a place say like Taco Bell, but with fresh, organic veggies, whole wheat tortillas, and organic meats and cheeses. It would be great if when I'm coming home from work late and don't have time to cook that I or any mother in this situation could hit up a drive thru and get some fresh, healthy food.
All I'm saying is that would be nice, but I'm not saying that that means that there should be no more McDonald's or no more Ronald. Who am I to tell someone that they can't go there. If you want to eat there everyday, then hey go for it. If your kid is heavy, then maybe don't go there so often. But know that that is your fault, not Ronald's.

That would be a nice idea in theory but I would hazard a guess and say that the cost to the consumer would be very high in order for a fast food place to offer things such as organic meats and fresh veggies. KWIM? For example, just even consider a place like Panera which isn't healthy per se but it's a better quality product than say, Burger King but it's expensive. For DH, my DD, and I to eat it's easily $25. That's a lot more money than if we were to run to McDonald's and order off the dollar menu or get a combo meal. That usually runs us around $14 which is an $11 difference.
So I guess my point is the idea behind fast food is cheap (and easy of course) and I don't think it would be easy to pull off a fast food place that is healthy AND affordable to the masses. The reality is that in order to eat well and be healthy you simply cannot beat eating at home. Eating out whether at a really nice place or a cheap fast food joint is always far more unhealthy and far more calorie dense than cooking for yourself at home.

I think at Chiptole all of their meats and veggies are organic. And you surely do pay for it... it is expensive.

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
Ronald McDonald has nothing to do w/childhood obesity. It is parents who do not set limits for their kids and fast food that are the real threat.
People cannot take responsibiltiy for themselves so they always look for a scapegoat.

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
Its not like dear old Ronald is dragging kids in there forcing them to eat. Its the easy convenient way with parents working long hours and not having time to cook.
as a kid, we did go to MCD's here and there; it was a treat to go. Yet we werent in the house at all during the summer..always out running, swimming, playing tag, baseball, rollerblading/skating etc.
the problem with obesity is the kids not getting activities out of the house and away from computers, video games, cell phones, etc.

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
I agree that Ronald McDonald is not the reason for childhood obesity. I also don't think he should be retired (although I don't think that he's used much anymore, as Ang pointed out). However, just because you have the time and money to make healthy, home-cooked meals for your kids doesn't mean that everyone does. My best friend is a single mom to two-year-old triplets and a four-year-old step-daughter (her ex-husband doesn't have anything to do with his daughter anymore, in terms of actual presence or financial help). She often has no choice but to feed her kids fast food since she doesn't have the time or money to make healthy home-cooked meals. Is that because she's lazy? Not at all. She works 50 hours a week and raises 4 children alone. So I just don't see this issue as so black and white.

See, I think people always have an excuse for not doing something. Surely, if she can afford fast food, she can afford a box of pasta and sauce, maybe even a pound of chopped meat. There is a healthy, economical meal that could feed for two days, as opposed to spending $20+ per day on fast food garbage. People make those choices for themselves. If she chooses to feed her family fast food, she should accept that could be physical repercussions.
There are always TRULY extenuating circumstances, but the majority come down to choosing convenience or thinking it is cheaper, when it really isn't.

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
Subway is "fast food", and there are plenty of healthy options.
Pizza is "fast food", and it's relatively healthy (compared to McD's, at least)

I think when people think fast food, they think of an establishment with a drive thru. No Subway has a drive thru and the only pizza place that does (TB/PH) is hardly healthy.

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
And to all the parents out there who use the excuse "but the characters and the toys make my children beg, cry, demand to go to McDonalds"..... I say to you that as a parent you have to say NO.
Yes, it's easier to say yes and avoid a tantrum. But parenting is about setting limits. My DD wants to play with a knife that's on the counter. I don't give it to her because it will allow me to avoid the horrible tantrum she's going to throw. I say no and she can throw herself on the floor if she wants to until something else appropriate catches her eye.
To all the parents who say their DC will not eat anything that they cook... I guarantee you they will eventually eat something once they get hungry enough!

Good point. I personally don't like drive-thus, so I wasn't thinking of this factor.

Yes, she makes pasta, and yes, she makes other meals when she can. But a lot of the time she is on the road between jobs or appointments (one child is pretty sick), and she doesn't have time to go home and cook a meal. Subway is more expensive than the dollar menu at McDs. She's blessed that her kids have the opportunity to run around a lot, and are at a healthy weight. But if they lived in the city, I'm not sure if she'd be in the same position.

But in the end if one day her kids have high cholesterol or are heavy SHE is the one responsible for feeding her kids so SHE is the one to blame if down the road her kids have issues. Just sayin'.
Truthfully, there is ALWAYS a better option than eating fast food multiple times a week. Make a huge batch of pancakes on Sunday and freeze them and one night have "breakfast for dinner". Throw some burgers on the grill (way better for you than McDonald's). Make a tray of lasagna one night, eat half and freeze half for another night. Make a double batch of meatballs and freeze half for another day. Point is, there are plenty of alternatives to fast food that don't take a ton of time to prepare if you're willing to put in a little effort.

I'm so sick of people pinning their mistakes on other people. Ronald McDonald is not to blame for childhood obesity........toys in happy meals are not to blame for childhood obesity......lack of proper parenting, discipline and not learning how to say NO to your child is what is responsible for childhood obesity.

I think there are many factors contributing to childhood obesity ... NONE of which are Ronald McDonald and happy meal toys. Parents need to own up and take responsibility for their kids instead of trying to pass the buck. Even if they got rid of Ronald McDonald and the happy meal toys... there is still going to be childhood obesity because nobody has addressed the real problem.
Totally agree!
And growing up we were NEVER in the house during the summer until it was time for dinner and bed. We spent ALL day outside. I find it so sad that there are commercials out trying to encourage kids to spend 60 minutes outside. That's pathetic.

Ridiculous. These people don't have better things to do with their time? If you don't like the burgers, the clown or the message then don't go there.
ITA!
Only in America would we blame a deranged clown for kids' poor eating habits! If anything, Ronald DETERS me from going to McDonalds! I mean, look at that crazy b@stard! Now Grimace and the Hamburglar on the otherhand...they're ok. Although I'm pretty sure stealing is wrong...
I think stealing and the hamburglar is a different article. But I'm sure there are activist grooups petitioning him!

Re: Junk food foes to McDonald's: Retire Ronald!
People will blame everything and anything they can, but in reality it's the responsibility of parents to make sure their children are eating correctly. When I was a kid, fast food was a treat reserved for long road trips (and even then, we'd bring food for day one, and *maybe* stop at McDonalds for dinner one night). We rode bikes, ran around outside. My brother and I were healthy weights. Ronald existed.
My husband's cousin feeds her kids fast food night and day--she has a gorgeous kitchen, but refuses to cook unless it's ramen noodles. The extent of their exercise is moving their thumbs on the Xbox controllers. They're all under 15 and overweight. I'm sure Ronald is to blame.
