Just curious...property that borders a school
why do people avoid homes that have backyards border schools? What is bad about that?
Just curious...I noticed it was a popular feature to avoid when looking for a home.

Re: Just curious...property that borders a school
i posted about buying across from a school a little while ago for advice, based on the responses i've gotten and people's experiences living near a school it could get noisy and there might be a lot of traffic on the street of people parking and getting to/from events both during the school day and evening events. but if you love the home and you don't mind that stuff then go for it!

Re: Just curious...property that borders a school
Personally, DH and I didn't look at homes that border a school b/c (besides the traffic of buses and parent drop off/pick ups) there would probably be a lot of noise with kids playing (if its an elementary school) or kids just hanging out (if its a middle - high school). I know that's what my friends and I used to do in HS....we'd BS at the end of the day and it would often spill over onto the neighboring home owners lawn. Or for elementary school, at the end of the day when parents are talking - the kids run around - again on the neighboring lawns. Plus, schools tend to be places where kids hang out at night. There was a school around the corner from my mom's house and Friday and Saturday nights, kids would go skateboarding there b/c of the open spaces.
At least, those are the reasons why I wouldn't buy near a school....but that's just my opinion.

Re: Just curious...property that borders a school
My parents house is about 2 blocks from an elementary school/ middle school. The schools face the other direction so there was never any traffic but sometimes you could hear the cheering for baseball games and such. It wasn't bad and never bothered me, but this was 2 blocks away, so any closer and I can see noise being an issue. If its a hs you also have to think about parking if you are near the entrance. Kids might park in front of your house all day or it may be a no parking zone so you cant park on the street.

Re: Just curious...property that borders a school
- Noise bell after every period Kids screaming More traffic noise while passing by the house (pedestrians, cars, buses, etc..)
- More traffic Cars parking everywhere. Nightmare when it's a night event and every parent parks their car wherever they find a spot in the street. It can go a few blocks diameter
Lots of car around drop off and pick up
More buses

On the other hand, it's nice to live close enough to the school (walking distance) to use it's playground, track, tennis courts and/or basketball hoops on the weekend.

Re: Just curious...property that borders a school
It is nice when my grandson comes over on the weekend and grandpa goes in the school yard with him and they can hit some balls.

Re: Just curious...property that borders a school
I think it really varies. Our backyard overlooks a field for the HS and we love it! In the spring for about 2 weeks kids are outside for gym, occasional games, etc but for the most part, it's nice and quiet. We never have a problem with kids loitering, parking, walking around, etc.
I wouldn't want to live next to the school's entrance, but the property may not always be a bad thing.
