Just got back from my 16w appointment ... and a lecture from my OB
Woops, I gained 5 lbs (YES FIVE POUNDS) since my last appointment 4 weeks ago. So my doctor (she was nice about it) asked what I've been eating.
Well, let's just say she was shocked at what I've been eating and was like, "no no no"
She gave me a lot of ideas of healthier and better options and told me that I could actually lose weight or maintain my weight if I followed her suggestions, which is not the goal but she said it wouldn't be bad since I am overweight. Most importantly, what struck a chord was when she mentioned that children learn to eat the way their parents eat and with childhood obesity so rampant, it's important to do whatever I can to eat well so that my child/ren eat well.
So I had a nice big salad for dinner. Let's see how long I last!
I guess that pizza and cheesecake I had for lunch today didn't help!!!
ETA: I had gained only 1lb as of 12 weeks, so now at 16w I'm up a total of 6lbs.

Yesi, I am going to give you the best tip ever.
Go to your appointments first thing in the morning before you eat. I bet you really didn't gain 5 pounds!
And while I agree and definitely plan on eating healthy after Miss Bean is here because I want back into my jean collection, she doesn't know what I am doing now. She does know if I don't eat what she likes though, because she beats me with her feet! She kicks happier when she gets ice cream!

Sorry but that's ridiculous - 6lbs in 16wks is nothing to worry about! I gained that in a week at one point (my MD said she was impressed )

I don't think 6 lbs in 16 weeks is bad at all. One of my friends gained 20 lbs her first trimester

I have DEF thought about going first thing in the morning because of the weigh in!!! It's just too hard to get in to see her that early and then DH wouldn't be able to go with me so after work it is for now. But ugh on the weigh ins after eating breakfast, lunch, and a snack!! And I had drank almost an entire bottle of water before I got weighed in because the waiting room was so hot. Oh well!

I think in general it's not too bad, but since I was overweight before being pregnant, they are recommending I only gain 18 pounds for the whole pregnancy. I mean, I don't know if I will be able to do that, but I don't want to gain 50lbs being as heavy as I am already.
But thank you!!! Good to hear that 6 lbs in 16 weeks isn't too bad

I would take that advice with a grain of salt. Eating healthy is great, but cheesecake is yummy! You ate a whole days worth of food and drank a whole days worth of water before you went! Doesn't count-I went in the afternoon once and gained weight-a few weeks later in the morning when I went, I magically was down!

You can do it - I only gained 14 lbs my first pregnancy and hoping for no more than 10 this time. I am 17 weeks and so far -3lbs. I don't consider you to be heavy at all - I am A LOT heavier than you and they told me no more than 25. Every doctor is different.

I don't think 6 lbs in 16 weeks is bad at all. One of my friends gained 20 lbs her first trimester
She suggested I cut out ALL the carbs I've been eating (woops) and stick to complex carbs instead like whole wheat bread or some brown rice. She also suggested that dinner should be a plate of 2/3 veggies and 1/3 protein. Um, I have NO veggies right now. She gave me some suggestions on how to include veggies (sautee a bit of olive oil with some fresh garlic and then add veggies for example) in my meals.
Also to eat more salads. And to make homemade vegetable soup (without much carbs).
To use my George Foreman to cook my chicken or beef.
What else? She suggested eating cottage cheese with berries. Also yogurt. She said eggs with whole wheat toast was good, but no cheese.
Stuff like that.
She gave me her "recipe" for a chopped salad and I actually stopped at the market on my way home and made that for dinner. It was pretty good! Simple, but the crunch factor made it feel more filling. I can give you the "recipe" if you want.

There's no way I'd actually ever tell, but you'd be shocked at how much I actually weigh Unfortunately I gained about 30lbs after my wedding and didn't lose ANY before getting pregnant
I HOPE I can stick to a lower amount of total weight gain! I don't care that much about the total number, but I have a bad back and extra weight is just going to make it hurt worse (it's already bad!) so that's like my main concern.

Yesi, me too, from the steroids I was on. But my OB said not to worry right now-don't go crazy, but don't freak out! But I agree-less you gain, less you have to lose. That is what I am trying to do! I am trying to stay below 30 lbs.
And if you gain more, don't worry! We can motivate each other!

I'm 31 weeks and only up 14 pounds. My doctor wanted me to stick to 20-25 and I think at this point I should be able to do that pretty easily but I've been really lucky or really unlucky depending on how you look at it - I have not been eating very healthy at all but I have had such serious food aversions my entire pregnancy and such a hard time eating that it hasn't mattered that much that when I do manage to eat, it's a cheeseburger or something like that (which is btw, why my cholesterol is through the roof and I will be on a strict diet once I can eat like a normal person again). You really just never know what your body's going to do when you're pregnant. Anyway, I've gained my weight in spurts and was about the same at 16 weeks so you really have nothing to worry about at this point. Good luck! And don't feel guilty about cheesecake here and there - the baby needs calcium too

Re: Just got back from my 16w appointment ... and a lecture from my OB
My OB misread the nurses note, and starting lecturing me about how I gained 8 lbs in 4 weeks.
How I am putting myself at risk for preclamsia and gest diabetes, and a huge baby, and a c-section...
When when I looked like I was about to cry, she looked at it again and apologized that she misread and it was 8lbs since I started seeing her.
Well I forgave her, we both joked about it It was kind of cute to see how bad she felt about it.
In all honesty I have been eating like a pig on days I'm not nauseous
ETA: they mean well, there are a lot of bad things that go along with gaining too much weight, they are just trying to spare you the trouble.

I've had visits where I've gained 1lb in 4 wks and visits where I've gained 6lbs in 4 wks. The nurse and OB NEVER say a thing about my weight! I don't think 5lbs in 4 wks is alot actually. And, I don't think being up 6lbs at 16 wks is terrible either! Sorry she made you feel bad!

Re: Just got back from my 16w appointment ... and a lecture from my OB
I really doubt you are as overweight as you think you are. I made sure to get weighed with my shoes on at my first appt, and from now on I will take off my shoes. Also I always say can I go pee in the cup now (before the weigh in), hey it helps right. I am so scared I am going to gain a ton of weight too. At my first appt I think I was up 2 lbs, at 8 weeks. I am dreading finding out what I weigh at my next appt when I am 12 weeks.

Don't stress out about weight gain. Try to eat healthy, but your body is going to gain what it needs for pregnancy. Some people gain a lot even though they exercise and eat healthy. Everyone's body reacts differently to pregnancy.
I was my heaviest weight prior to getting pregnant. My doctor wanted me to gain 15-20 lbs. I ended up gaining 45 lbs. I lost it all within 6-8 weeks. 6 lbs at 16 weeks sounds completely normal.

Re: Just got back from my 16w appointment ... and a lecture from my OB
My Dr advised me not to gain too much either. I am overweight and have a heart condition, so we are trying to minimize the risks to my heart really.
I am 20 weeks and have gained about 10lbs. I am trying to stay under 25lbs.
I eat a lot, just very healthy stuff. luckily that is waht I crave.
Some of my tips:
For breakfast- I eat dannon light & fit yogurt with some multigrain cheerios or organic granola in it. I get my calcium, and it's filling and healthy.
Then I bring 3 fruits with me to work every day as snacks.
For lunch, it depends. Sometimes I bring a sandwhich or leftovers, sometimes I buy soemthing.
Dinner- chicken & veggies almost every night. And I only use brown rice/pasta.
Late night snacks are usually celery/carrot sticks bc I like the crunchiness.
Of course, if I am craving something, I usually have it. Not too much tho.
I don't think you are as overweight as you think you are. I don't think you gained too much so far. Just wanted to share my method to staying at a reasonable weight.

I KNOW!!! I had a salad for lunch and by 3pm I felt like I was going to faint! So off to Starbucks I went for a caramel frapp just a few minutes ago. I tried!
