Just lurking...but I have a question...
Anyone's inlaws not thrilled by the idea of grandchildren? My parents have one (my nephew), and he's just the light of their life - they simply can't wait for DH and I to have a baby. We're not even TTC, but whenever I bring it up with my MIL, I get a chilly-at-best response. This weekend we were talking about her house, which has 4 BRs and I said In a few years you may need those extra BRs when we ship the grandchildren over to grandmas! and she gave a little nervous laugh
I just dont' get it. Maybe she's afraid we'll move back to NY and doesn't want to show that she'd be excited because she'd just get hurt?? I don't know, but it's very discouraging, disappointing, etc...
Okay vent over...anyone else??? And for those who have children who's grandparents are less than enthusiastic, how do you cope???

I think that the topic of grandchildren before you are pregnant is often an uncomfortable one. There are so many emotions tied to the topic and some people are terrified to say the wrong thing. I'd say give her the benefit of the doubt for now.

Re: Just lurking...but I have a question...
I had a similar response from my mother... I think part of it was that she wasn't ready to face the fact that she's old enough to be a grandmother! I'm the youngest of three, and my older brothers aren't even close to having children, let alone marriage. So, she never really considered that her youngest would have children first. She kept telling me there was no need to rush, and just wasn't really open to the idea everytime I hinted at it. I really think it just made her a little sad to think her youngest was old enough to have a little child of her own and that was hard to swallow. But, never fear, now that my little girl is in the world my mother couldn't be happier

Re: Just lurking...but I have a question...
My mother was less than excited when she found out I was pregnant. It was less about the baby and more about the fact that she did not see herself as a grandma. That meant that she was OLD!!
Well, she was horrible during my whole pregnancy but the second my daughter popped out she was a whole different person. She went from not wanting to be called grandma to insisting that the baby call her grandma.
I am sure she will love the baby when you guys decide to have one.

My MIL wasn't thrilled at ALL. As soon as Christopher came around though, she instantly changed her tune. Now she's thrilled that we're having #2.
