Just saw chips in the wood on DS's crib

For some reason there are gold button looking things on the sides of DS's mattress. I guess when I pick up the mattress to change the sheet and mattress cover these buttons scrape against the wood on his crib and I just saw a whole bunch of scratches and chips on the inside of the front piece. I know the crib is not going to stay perfect forever, but W T F? It's only 3 months old. I used one of the furniture markers to try and hide the chips but there is one big scratch that is sticking out. Should the wood be chipping that easily? For christ sake, a crib mattress did it

Both of my kids chewed on their cribs, so if it makes you feel any better ours look a million times worse than yours.
