Just started house hunting this weekend

and we're disappointed already! We went to a few open houses this past weekend to see what's in our price range in the area that we want to live. We didn't expect to find our dream house right away, but we weren't expecting such crap either! This is going to be a long process.

Thanks for letting me vent.Chat Icon

Re: Just started house hunting this weekend

What area are you looking in? We may need to expand our search more b/c we are only looking in one school district and it seems to be very popular right now!

I've heard a few stories that the first house turned out to be "the one" so it's possible you've found it. Good luck with your search!

What school district are you looking in? DH and I looked for about a year before we found the house we wanted in the area we wanted. The process was filled with disappointments and readjusting our expectations but now we are thrilled with where we ended up. Good luck!

We are looking in the Bayport Bluepoint school district. DH grew up there and we spend so much time there now b/c his parents still live there.

Try not to get discouraged so quick!!
House hunting was fun for us in the beginning but after it dragged on and on and got up to somewhere around 80 houses it was awful.
But the right house WILL come along. Just remember to try and see the "bones" of a house. A house might be messy or outdated, but look past that and see what YOU can do to it.Chat Icon

Also learn to be flexible. If possible, don't restrict yourself to one area. Especially if you don't have kids right now, don't be so concerned about the SD.

Hang in there. House hunting takes some time. I looked at it in this way, the more houses I saw, the more I realized what I wanted and what I didn't want. I also realized what we could get for the money in different areas and etc. It is kind of like doing research. You will find the right house, it just takes time.

We're looking in the Three Village area. We've seen some really, really nice ones lately...and the prices are definitely coming down! Good luck!

Re: Just started house hunting this weekend

The same thing happened to us. We lost track of how many houses we actually looked at in the end, but it was probably 50 - 75 houses before we found the one we bought. We changed our minds many times and re-thought where and how much. Just keep looking and keep your minds open to the possibility of each house. Keep notes to keep track if you find ones that you like. GL, it's hard, but in the end, you will have the house you want and you can decorate the way you want. Chat Icon

Re: Just started house hunting this weekend

We had the same feelings when we started and then we ventured out of our area to surrounding areas on the North Shore and we found more crappy homes, but we also found the house we ended up buying and now living in!

When we first started looking, we felt the same way. We were REALLY discouraged, but after months of looking we found exactly what we were hoping for. Good luck Chat Icon

I agree with everything she said. We looked for almost 6 months until we found a house we loved. It can take time. try not to let it drive you crazy. It will all work out.

Re: Just started house hunting this weekend

Have you looked in the surrounding areas--holbrook, sayville, oakdale etc. I mean there are so many great areas, espcially if you get discouraged. I live in sayville and we got lucky and found a house pretty quickly but it needed a lot of work. Don't get discouraged but you might want to look in the surrounding areas to in your price range just to see what else is out there and to compare it to bayport/bluepoint school district. Maybe you can get more for your money--you never know. Good luck :) I am sending you some house dustChat Icon Chat Icon
