Just wanted to share - Car Seat Inspection
Just came back from it at Good Sam. I totally, totally recommend it! Our car seat was totally in wrong, even though it barely budged (which I thought was the big test). The woman who inspected it said 96-97% of the carseats they inspect are in wrong .
So worth the trip! She was not allowed to take a tip, but recommended we take that $$ and make a donation to the Rehabiliation Services, which runs the inspections.

Re: Just wanted to share - Car Seat Inspection
I told DH we need an inspection when we get the car seat and he had no idea. I'll probably try the local fire dept.

DH didn't think this was necessary either, so I'll tell him what they told you.
Yes, I've heard fire and sometimes police departments will do this also.

Re: Just wanted to share - Car Seat Inspection
Silly question, but does the inspection cost anything? Just trying to keep a running tally of projected costs. TIA.

Local police stations will install and inspect them too, but check first if they have certified people to do it, not all do.
I know Mineola does....

Re: Just wanted to share - Car Seat Inspection
I work at a hospital in Westchester. One of our NICU Nurses runs our Car Seat Installation Program, here are some tid bits from a newsletter we published this summer:
In the year 2006, the hospital & the police department’s program inspected 1,431 child seats at their inspection station and only 10 seats were correctly installed!!! Some important points to remember when using a child seat: •The seat must be installed securely on the vehicle seat using either the vehicle seat belt or the latch system. NOT BOTH!
•There must not be more than 1 inch of movement right or left when pulled at the belt path. All children must remain rear facing in their convertible seats until they reach the upper weight limits for their particular seat in the rear facing position…approximately 30 pounds. Children are no longer turned around at one year old & 20 pounds! (American Academy of Pediatrics, March 2005).
•For rear facing children the harness slots must be at or below the level of the child’s shoulders. For forward facing, the harness straps must be at or above the level of the child’s shoulders.
•Make sure that the harness retainer clip is always at armpit level & that the harness straps are snug and flat on the child’s shoulders. You should not be able to pinch any harness material on the child’s shoulders.

When I called they took my info and it took a good week for them to call me back. Luckily the first appointment they had I was able to take since I am home from work already.

Brentwood police station also has certified people.
ETA: The woman today felt it was extremely important that people install their own seat because you never know when you are going to have to switch/change cars and move the seat. They don't like it when people just bring the seat totally uninstalled. Granted, ours was wrong, but she installed it, then had me install it - she checked it, and all was good. I feel like if we had to move it to a different car, I know what to do now.

Re: Just wanted to share - Car Seat Inspection
I took my car seats to be inspected at the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board in Mineola/Garden City. The guy was really helpful and did both my seats.

Re: Just wanted to share - Car Seat Inspection
Forgive the ignorance...
Do you have this done as soon as you purchase a seat or is this only for older seats? How often to you have a seat inspected?
With so many seats on the market, can anyone recommend a brand or what to look for? I know I have to start a registry within the next few months and I have no idea where to start. One of my friends has an infant seat that's also a carrier and can even fit in the stroller so she never really has to take the baby out... thought this was a good idea if the baby falls asleep in the car rather than waking him/her up.

You want to get the car seat installed before you put the baby in it. As the baby outgrows the infant car seat, and switches to a convertible, you can get it inspected again. You do need to check the seatbelt/latch occassionally on your own as it will loosen a little over time.
We went with the Graco Snugride carseat - it snaps right into a stroller frame or into one of the bigger Graco strollers. According to the woman today, it is the seat they see the most often, by far. The base stays in the car, and the carrier part is what you bring in and out of the house (like what your friend has).
Hope that helps!!
