Kanye West: MTV Exploited Britney & Me

Kanye West, never known for holding his tongue, is railing against MTV after leaving empty-handed from Sunday's Video Music Awards, charging that the network misled him – and also exploited Britney Spears.
"They exploited Britney in helping to end her career," West told deejay JJ at New York radio station Z100 on Monday. "When Britney was opening [the VMA telecast], near the end, I felt so bad for her. I said, 'Man, it's a dirty game. This game will chew you up and spit you out.'" (Listen to the interview here.)
The rapper doesn't just take umbrage with the handling of Spears, whose performance has been maligned by critics and fans alike.
West tells Z100 he felt misled and "betrayed" by the network, and has promised to never work with MTV again. The rapper says he's already cancelled planned appearances on TRL to promote his new album Graduation. Specifically, West takes issue with the way performances were set up – that he should have performed on the main stage and not from a private suite where many artists performed for small groups of fans throughout the telecast.
"I wasn't mad that I just didn't win any awards," West says. "For me, [MTV] made it seem like performing on the main stage was a bad thing, and the suites were just so great. It was my dream when I made 'Stronger' to open up the VMAs with a real power performance.
"And I just feel like I got betrayed by them," the rapper continues. "I feel like they tried to make it seem like I was so into everything that was going on in the show."
Another sticking point: Pamela Anderson's racy introduction on the telecast. (Anderson appeared in a music video for West's single "Touch the Sky.") Before West performed "Good Life" from his suite, the former Baywatch star told viewers, "One of the best times I've ever had was making out with the next performer in the middle of the desert. I think I had my tongue so far down his throat I could taste his fiancée – and I might need a repeat performance later tonight."
"I'm engaged, and I feel like it's disrespectful to my relationship," West says of Anderson's remarks, which he claims the network assured him would not happen.
When JJ pointed out that West was being pretty blunt by speaking out against MTV, the rapper responded in a characteristically unapologetic fashion: "I have a connection in the fans' heart that the press can't stop."
There was no immediate response from MTV. Stay tuned.

You know what, I really don't like Kanye all that much. He's got one or two good songs, but for the most part I think he's just a racially charged musician. But after reading these comments, I actually have a little more respect for the guy. He's probably right, MTV more than likely did exploit them. That's what MTV is about. But at the same time, artists are getting their name and their music out there via MTV (when MTV actually plays music, that is).
But if the guy really feels he was wronged by MTV and he really goes thru with boycotting them, then more power to him. I give him much credit. Maybe this is just a case of sour grapes for Kanye. Who knows? We'll see....
On the other hand, Britney Spears will suck the MTV spotlight (amongst other things) until the moment they stop shining it on her...and it looks like that moment may be coming soon.

I heard part of this interview yesterday and he kept on bringing up the awards over and over again and how betrayed he was and blah blah. He said that MTV told him he was going to win an award so that is why he went and now he is betrayed by them. JJ seemed very uncomfortable... He was like "yeah, uh, I can see how you would be disappointed, now lets talk about your album," and Kanye just kept on and on about MTV.

I have a lot of respect for Kanye as a person and as an artist. His production is nuts.
He is blunt and uncensored which doesn't go over well with many BUT he holds his ground.
My favorite Kanye quote is in the October issue of XXL magazine - "I'd rather be hated for what I am than loved for what I'm not" How can you not respect that?

I heard this interview and I have to say yes he is a sore loser, but he does make some points.
They also left out the part where he said that the whole scene at the Europe MTV VMAs last year happened because - according to him - MTV TOLD him he was going to win an award if he went, and then they didn't give him one. He said he felt they did that on purpose just to get a "moment" out of him and get ratings. He felt like they exploited him last year and tried to do and did the same thing this year. If that's true - then I can see his point of view.
I agree with him that they totally exploited Britney. They knew she "wasn't ready" (as he said) but gave her the opening number anyway knowing she would give them ratings whether she bombed or not.
But in the end - he is just SO FULL OF HIMSELF and that's where he loses me. This guy seriously thinks he is God's gift to music. He went on and on about how his music is "legendary" and his album is so "inspirational". It's ridiculous.

you have an album coming out today...you should be on mtv promoting it and getting the word out, not bad mouthing them on the radio for all to hear! if he was smart, he would have used them (like he claims they used him) to promote the hell out of his album and THEN stuck it to them!
i love kanye, but he needs to learn when to stop talking.

I agree that Pamela Anderson's comments were a little uncalled for & icky.
I don't know if MTV betrayed him so much, as just planned a show poorly.
I think they really thought those random party things were the coolest thing ever.
I was thinking this about Justin Timberlake too.
It seems like they picked big names to give the honor of hosting thess little parties to, but
they would have made more impact with a full-on main stage performance.

And the Pam Anderson thing...I couldn't even understand what the hell she said anyway. I doubt anyone even heard her. But now he's publicly repeated it. Slick!

I bet he compares himself to the Beatles or Elvis. Please! take your sorry azzed sore loser self and get a life.
You and your handlers and attorneys should have been on this to make sure you weren't exploited. If you felt exploited it was your own damn fault. You agreed to be there, you knew there was a chance you weren't going to win an award and apparently you felt so high and mighty that if you knew you weren't going to win you wouldn't show up to support your fellow musicians and performers.

I think you are manufactured and self serving.
And..don't comment about anyone else. Fight your own battles and leave it at that.

I love Kanye and Stronger is a great song. I think the whole VMAs were set up wrong this year. Foo Fighters are great...to have them there for a 10 sec show is nonsense.
