Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

I regularly pick up other people's houses on my video monitor and it goes away as soon as I turn the camera on in DD's room. Usually it's a neighbor's crib or PNP that I see for a brief moment, but lately I've been picking up a pre-teen boy's bedroom. He looks too old to have a video monitor in his room, then again I don't know the situation in that house. It got me thinking though...

If you have a video monitor, what age do you plan on stopping its use? I've already stopped DS's room (he's 3), but I'm still keeping it on DD (she's 19 months).

I don't know when we'll stop using it, but it will definitely be before the preteen years. By then I plan to have a microchip and GPS tracking device on DD Chat Icon

I do intend to use the monitor on my dog once we're done with it though. I would love to know what it is that dog is up to all day Chat Icon

What's strange is that he doesn't seem to know it's there. Either that or he's ignoring it. It's focused on his bed. The lack of privacy at his age seems to bother me Chat Icon

Maybe I'm thinking way too into it, but what if the kid really doesn't know and it is being used by a pedophile? Am I crazy to even think it? I don't even know what you could do to figure it all out.

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

honestly, you dont know the situation the child is in.

Maybe he tried to commit suicide and his parents have to watch him 24/7... thats not an invasion of privacy, thats a parent protecting their child.

Also, maybe the parents had suspicion that the kid is using drugs or cutting himself... there are a million options.

I dont see naything wrong with monitoring your child, even if its a teenager, if its necessary!!!

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

My friend has one on at night in her 7 year olds room. I think its a bit much. I would not have it on in a preteens room sort of creepy unless there was some sort of concern in which the child needs round the clock supervising

It's true that you don't know what the situation is. So, I can't comment on that.

For me, I never even used a video monitor until my younger DD was around two (but a health situation precipitated that). It's in our nursery now and I switch it on now and again...like this week because DS has had some high fevers. I'd imagine I would get rid of it around age 2 or 3.

I can't imagine needing it beyond that.

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

I probably wouldnt do it, but then again i dont have a video monitor for my babies for the reason that anyone can pick up on the station and see them the same way you can see your neighbors kids.

That being said, could it be a webcam or something else just on the same frequency.

Could be the boy needs monitoring of some sort.......strange if there is no reason for it but normal if the child needs supervision due to a health issue or mental issue of some kind.

For example..... night terrors ......a video monitor may be good so the parent knows to enter the room or not....if the child is safe....let the kid ride it out....just a thought.

In a normally functioning 13 year olds room with NO issues... then strange.

However, this child could have epilepsy, could be special needs, could have autism, could have tried to commit suicide, could be using drugs or alcohol.

There are any number of reasons why the parents feel this is necessary.

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

There's probably something going on there- maybe he has a medical condition and the parents want to make sure he's ok while he's sleeping.

Or maybe he sleep-walks- could be anything!

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

My niece has epilepsy and her worst seizures are at night, when she is in bed. I can see a parent monitoring a kid that age for a variety of reasons.

What I find disturbing is how other people within a certain radius can see other people's children on those things, whatever age they are.

I never used one with ds. I would think there is way more to the preteen story then you neighbor knows. Im sure there is a history.

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

we use a monitor for DD's room. she is 3.5, but the video part if broken, so it's just sound.

I can't imagine using one when she is 13, 14 etc.

Re: Keeping a video monitor on a pre-teen?

I haven't gotten one yet, but I plan to once DD moves into her own room. I'm just going to use it until I feel confident in her safety without my constant watch (which I assume would be around age 2 or 3). By 5 years old it already seems that a child would be too old to be monitored (but that of course depends on the child).

I think it's creepy that you've picked up on a pre-teen's room. I hope there's a legitimate reason for it. You just never know. I also just find it creepy in general that you can pick up on other people's monitors. I guess I know now never to breastfeed in front of it... or pick a wedgie

ita!

my ds' are 2 and 4 and both have video monitors and i plan on keeping them indefinitely. they are on the other side of the house and both occasionally vomit at night (my 2 yr old doesn't even make a sound and sleeps in it if i don't catch it) so i watch them like a hawk. you never know what can be happening, even at 13.

under normal circumstances, I do NOT plan to have a video monitor on my son (we actually no longer have one anyway).

I would DIE DIE DIE if the camera was turned on the day he "discovered" himself.

seriously.

Not in their bedroom, but I do know someone who keeps one on in their den when their high schooler is having friends over to make sure they aren't drinking or doing drugs. I don't think I'll do that, but never say never.....
