Ketones - Know Anything About Them??

does anyone else have to tinkle on a stick every day to check for ketones in your FMU???

This is my second day this week with 'moderate' and no one is answering at the Diabetes Center. I left a message...but i don't think anyone will call me back....

They told me that if you have ketones in your tinkle, you aren't eating enough & the baby isn't getting enough. I'm eating EXACTLY what they told me too and my blood has been okay...

I had them with DS every time I went to the OB. I had toxemia and that is why my Ketones were high.

And I also would have a high reading if I didn't drink enough water.

I thought it had to do with Toxemia not Diabetes.

How has your blood pressure been?

It can also be indicative of dehydration. I would think that if you are eating exactly what they are telling you to eat and your sugar levels are WNL, that you are probably dehydrated.. It is the FMU, and people tend to be dehydrated first thing in the AM.. HTH

i have no idea about my blood pressure, i haven't seen the OB for awhile and they didn't check at the Diabetes Center...

I have ONLY been drinking water, nothing more (because of the GD)... I've been following the GD diet to the letter.....

I had to do it when I had GD. Honestly, after the first week I didn't even bother to check it anymore because I always had ketones. I think it's inevitable because your GD diet is so restricted you're bound to lose weight and burn fat. I did, I lost a decent amount of weight but Emme was fine. Chat Icon My BP was always perfect as well. Ketones are just a by-product of fat burning, that's what my endo told me and why they wanted me to test.

I had ketones b/c I was dehydrated b/c I had hyperemsis.

It's a sign of dehydration. Just make sure you keep drinking water (gatorade in my case) to keep the ketones lower.Chat Icon

ETA: I also had preeclampsia too, but not til the last week that I was preggo.

How much water are you drinking???
What color is your urine (its hsould be a light yellow, straw colored) and you should be goign every few hours.

If your urine is darker then you are dehydrated.

Around 20 weeks I had to drink 3-4 LITERS of water to stay hydrated. I also had ketones in my urine form hyperemesis and not eating much!

i would say about 8-10 8 ounce cups a day....

my pee varies in color of yellow shades...(in the morning - it seems darker). Odd though - when i wipe, the yellow is on the TP too though...(i just noticed this a few minutes ago)..

YOu need to drink more, you are drinking about 64-80 ounces of water that is the minimum amount of water an adult who is NOT PG needs to drink a day! I would try to drink double that! I know its hard but you can also try seltzer with lemon or lime...It will be hard at frist but eventually it will get easier to drink adn you will feel a lot better....

The yellow when wiping is probably a combination or urine and lovely discharge!!! The discharge will get worse as you go along..... You will also need to drink more water as you progress in your pregnancy.

I am 36 weeks and need to drink about 5-6 liters of water A DAY to stay hydratedChat Icon Its ridiculous! But Most of my PG symtoms go away when I drink more water and I feel better and have more energy when I drink!

I have a 1 liter nalgene water bottle that I carry around with me and re-fill and constantly am taking sips

See how your practitioner feels... I was told no artificial sweeteners and I stayed away from them before I got PG anyway......

When I'm bored with planin water I sometimes add a little juice to my water but I'm not sure that will help you in managing your sugars. Give your OB a call and see what they say about the crysal light!

I had Keytones with my first pregnancy but it was linked to my pre-eclampsia. I didn't have the issue with my GD second time around. It can be caused by not eating enough. I would try increasing your food intake. Just spread it across the day. And keep drinking.

I drink Crystal light and my doc said it is fine.

Re: Ketones - Know Anything About Them??

I had to do with last pregnancy when I had GD. A month before I was due I had a high level of ketons in blood, called my dietician and no one returned my call.. later that night I had Horrible back pain, started vomiting and was admitted into the hospital b/c of contractions, turns out my one kidney was swollen and they thought possible kidney stones. But with my belly they couldnt tell if it was actual stones, so had to stay in hospital for 5 days until they got contractions to stop.. if they didnt they were going to take dd out.

I wouldnt be alarmed.. ketones could be a sign of few things.. just contact your OB and let him tell you what to do.. I would drink and eat and then retest and see if levels change.

Ok, i would retest before bed, and then take test again in morning.. make sure to eat a good snack before bed, so the baby gets the nutrients at night. How are your blood levels?

Don't freak outChat Icon

I had ketones literally my entire pregnancy and didn't develop preeclampsia until the last week I was pregnant (and that is why I was induced) so for me, they didn't go hand in hand.

Doctors are very aware of preeclampsia, so you will know if your OB is concerned Chat Icon

they have been within range all day.. i had two bad tests yesterday out of 4...and by bad - i mean off by 8-9 (should've been 120 - was 124 or 128, etc.)...

i'm not feeling terribly hungry...but i have been eating the snacks that they assigned me....including cutting the carbs and making sure i'm doing protein too with any snack...

if i test 'moderate' again tomorrow AM - i'm definitely calling the OB on call....i'm so nervous - i don't want to do anything bad to the baby...i'd never forgive myself...

we're seeing the Maternal Fetal Specialist on Tuesday...i have a bad feeling insulin is in my future....

You are too early on for pre-eclampsia. I had it with DD and usually the earliest it begins to show up is 27 weeks.Chat Icon

i read something online (i read ONE thing and STOPPED researching)...and it said 20 weeks is the earliest it can show...

Typically, preeclampsia occurs after 20 weeks gestation (in the late 2nd or 3rd trimesters or middle to late pregnancy), though it can occur earlier. Proper prenatal care is essential to diagnose and manage preeclampsia. Preeclampsia, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) and toxemia are closely related conditions. HELLP Syndrome and eclampsia are other manifestations of the same syndrome. It is important to note that research shows that more women die from preeclampsia than eclampsia and one is not necessarily more serious than the other.

Seriously, stop looking these things up online because it can drive you crazy (it certainly did me). I had HELLP syndrome, really badly and never had ketones until it was already bad. The instances earlier than 27 weeks are extreme and very RARE situations. Trust me, I know way more than anyone should on the subject. Even now, my high risk OB for this pregnancy says we'll start doing weekly blood tests after 27 weeks. DO NOT go on that site I cannot even tell you how many serious panic attacks I had because of that site. This pregnancy I am not looking anything up and I am so much more relaxed. Don't worry about pre-e at this point but bring it up with your OB if you are concerned. Chat Icon
