kids and 9-11 lesson?
did you teach your children about 9-11? i'd like for them to actually watch some of the bits of the day (my kids are NOT faint of heart-- legend of sleepy hollow is their favorite movie)
any ideas on how to teach them about the day?

They've heard the story since they were little. They know that I was pregnant when the planes hit. Daddy came to get me because I didn't want to leave the building I was in until I had him with me. That after walking around all day, we finally got on a train going home & you were kicking up a storm to let us know you were ok. And then you were born a week later (6 weeks early).
They don't really know about terrorism, muslim fundamentalists, etc. but I'm sure that will come up this year because the oldest will likely question why 2 planes hit & the towers went down.

my one daughter asks "why?" all the time. i know it will come up if she sees clips of the day. what do i say? "people hate america?" is that good enough? i kind of think she'd get scared at that... nothing that would make her lose sleep, but make her ask more and more questions that i can't answer!

My dd was 3 when it happened and we didn't really explain it then. Once she got into school, it was part of history and my almost 8 year old knows all about it and they have learned about it in school too.

I plan to explain it was a group of people who hated the US for various reasons. While there is no justification for the attack, I want them to know that US policy & the history behind the hatred.
I'm sure it's not a popular way of explaining it but I hate the shortened cleaned version of history I received as I kid. I think it makes for better policymakers if the younger generations see how policies shape the future.
