OMG, I think about this constantly. Especially having a baby born on 12/30 I am like "*** can I plan???!!!". In any event, I went to a 1st b-day party for a girl a couple months ago and my friend had the girl raggedy-ann type clowns that sing songs and make sand art with the rest of the older kids. It was cute, and they weren't scary like regular clowns LOL.

I used smallworldentertainment.com and had a sesame street puppet show, balloon animals and tattoos. I thought it was cute and reasonable.

I've been thinking about it, too. I found a lady in Charlotte that does the most AWESOME cakes, and I've already consulted with her for DD's 1st birthday cake

Re: Kids entertainment for 1st birthday?
Abby's first birthday is in less than 2 months and we are not doing characters or special entertainment. We will have fun things for the kids to play with/on/etc, but after a while, it gets out of hand and after consulting with many mothers, DH and I decided it wasn't necessary to have a hired character considering the ages of her friends.

See I believe this as well, as most of her "friends" are her age or younger, we have a few friends with "older" kids, older meaning 2....but considering her birthday is in December and the birthday would be indoors I would need something to occupy them, thats why I was thinking of a gymboree type thing or some sort of "entertainment"

Re: Kids entertainment for 1st birthday?
We are also looking into a variety of ideas for our DD's first birthday in October.
I have attended a couple of first birthdays with entertainment. Some of the better ones included either a puppet show or a music together session.
I would love to hear of some other ideas

I used Nick the Balloonatic and he was amazing!! He entertained both the adults and the kids so it was a great combination! I highly recommend him.

Re: Kids entertainment for 1st birthday?
We hired DD's music together teacher. She performed for almost an hour with the kids in a circle. She engaged kids from a few months through 10 years. I got so many compliments about her from parents, grandparents and even from guests that were there without kids.
What I liked is that it was someone DD was familiar with and likes so she was very comfortable with it and opened right up and had fun. I think if I had hired a character or something like that she would have been shy or even scared.

Ive only been to a few 1st b-day parties, but the face painting and balloon art seem to be favorites.
