Kids just not into sports....

I'm trying to figure out if DS is just not into sports. He just turned 6 and is willing to do anything I sign him up for but I find him not really paying attention to the game and what he needs to do. When he's focused he will play well and of course brag about a certain play or whatever but 8 out of the 10 times he's goofing around, constantly talking, "oh a bug", "is it raining" , not really paying attention to the coach. I'm constantly saying listen and focus. I see other kids on his team which I think maybe the same grade or 1 year older and they have their serious game face on lol which I think is great but just wish DS would be into the game more that way. The one thing he really focuses on is taekwondo for two reasons I think he likes learning new moves and the master is strict, no none sense.

Also when it comes to competitive sports he does not do well with loosing or not being in the play or having a bad play. He will say this is a stupid bat, or this ball is stupid or you didnt throw right and will give up easily. it really gets annoying for me to hear that. He is improving how to act on that which is why I want to continue with sports. But when do you say to yourself your child is just not into sports? Just want to add when he was done with his game today the only thing he mentioned in the car was why the ice cream truck wasn't there and not what he did the past two hours. Chat Icon

Thoughts, advice, should I continue as is???

Re: Kids just not into sports....

My son was not that into sports at 6 and in fact asked to quit them all at one point. But I wanted him to do something, so he tried every sport until he found the one he liked. Turns out he hated his first sport, soccer, and was not very good at his second sport (my husband's fav) baseball. So we tried swimming, football(which he's good at but we opted out of) tennis, hockey, lacrosse and basketball and hip hop. At age nine my son is a basketball fanatic. He loves the game, practices everyday and asks to play travel. He also likes tennis and lacrosse and wants to try baseball and hockey again. He can't wait till he is allowed to try football again too. He's more mature and confident now and that helps.

I would not give up sports completely at such a young age because they are a healthy habit. But you may want to try different sports. There are so many choices and your son may just need to mature.

My daughter I fear will not like any sports. But for the next few years she will try one per season in hopes of her finding her sport. She is presently playing soccer and runs like an old man out there. LOL I think she is just not used to that kind of activity because all she did previously is an hour dance class.

I always make my kids finish the season. Sometimes they hate it in the beginning but as they progress they like it better. My son hated lacrosse and refused to dress for it for several weeks. I dragged him out the door. Well by the second month, he really liked the game. But I do not force another season.

Good luck.

I think it's ok if he doesn't like it. He likes taekwondo so run with that instead. It's physical so it will keep him fit and he finds it fun. It's a win-win.

I have asked my daughter multiple times if she wanted to join softball or soccer and she always says no (and her good friends do both and she knows this and still has no interest) so I am not going to force her. I think it's been easier for her and for DH and I in that we've offered her activities and she says yes or no and we go by that. I can't afford to spend money on activities unless she really wants to do them.

DS isn't into sports which shouldn't surprise me since DH and I never liked them.

I am signing him up for Cub Scouts hoping he will socialize and do some fun activities that aren't sports per say.
