Kids Wearing Masks all Day?
So with school starting soon, I'm starting to panic about this.
I am so not looking to start a debate...I realize it's a somewhat heated topic and I really don't want to start drama.
I just want to start off by saying that my family and I wear masks when necessary. I wouldn't call myself "anti-mask".
My school district released it's plan...5 days in school, which I'm so happy about. When they originally released the plan, it said kids would be required to wear masks when they couldn't be socially distanced. However, parents complained about this (grrrr), and now students must wear masks at all times except for lunch and recess. Even when they're at their desks, 6 feet apart, with plexiglass around them, they have to wear these masks all day. It makes me so sad. I think what bothers me the most is that all the surrounding districts only require masks when students cannot be socially distanced...they can take them off at their desks.
I don't even know what I'm asking really. This is probably more of a vent. Does your district require students to wear masks literally all day? If so, are you okay with this? I don't know if I'm overreacting/getting upset for no reason. Thanks for listening

My district requires it, with six feet spacing and plexiglass like yours.
Honestly, I wouldn’t send her otherwise.

Kids Wearing Masks all Day?
The virus is transmitted through droplets in the air. Masks reduce the number of droplets in the air reducing the spread of the disease. Masks should be worn all day. The virus doesn’t stop at 6 feet. I believe that even in districts that are strongly recommending, but not requiring masks, students will wind up wearing them all day since the teachers will require it.

Mine is saying the same thing. I think it’s something we will all get used to.

My district is also now requiring masks all day, regardless of distancing. They had originally said students could remove masks when seated at their desks, but that is no longer the case. Supposedly there was a new mandate put out by the Suffolk County DOH that they are pointing to as their reason for the change.
Honestly, I was quite uneasy when I had heard they weren’t requiring masks in the classrooms, but I’m not feeling very much better now that they are. I understand the importance of masks, but this is just a sad situation all around.

It’s a big part of why I rather just have the remote option. It’s uncomfortable to be in a stuffy classroom in hot days in September and October with a mask on all day. I feel for the staff and the students.

Our district is requiring the same - with mask breaks at the teachers discretion.
They have stated though that a mask break can be during a time they are working independently at their desk. Since they are basically going to be on their Chromebooks all day at their desks as limited paper is allowed - hopefully they will have a lot of quiet reading time.
My son made his Communion this weekend at an air conditioned church - masks were required. The kids looked miserable. I think it is going to be a a major distraction in a hot, unairconditioned classroom with no fans.

I am ok with whatever my district is doing. And if I’m not my option is to go virtual which is not an option in my opinion unless it’s an emergency.
So off he goes.

Same. I'm not thrilled with it but remote is not an option by any stretch of the imagination. Anything is better than that. Anything

Kids Wearing Masks all Day?
My district is requiring the same and I am ok with it. Honestly, I would be more concerned if they didn’t require masks. My DD has had plenty of practice the past few months wearing masks and she is comfortable with it.

Also, kids are better than we are, adults are getting all this (mostly false) info about wearing masks from ridiculous sources. Kids just do it.
My SO's son is on the spectrum/ADHD and he wears a mask just fine. We started training him in April. Any by no means do we love the masks ourselves, we just know this is what we need to do, right now, for however long we have to.

I am not thrilled with it either for my incoming kindergartner but he will adjust I'm sure. I'm more concerned about the masks falling on the floor (imagine them on the bathroom floor) and back on their faces which is just disgusting. I purchased a lanyard to wear around his neck to hopefully keep it there. I'm that confident though.

Our district is in Suffolk. As of right now, it's 5 full days, no masks unless they are in the hallways. If it changed, I'm going with the fully remote option, if that means pulling him from school and informing the district of our decision to home school, then so be it. My kindergartner is great with the mask, but after a couple hours of it rubbing his skin, it causes a rash. I know we could get a doctors note exempting him because of his skin condition, but it would single him out. No way are we doing that every day for a full day.

Re: Kids Wearing Masks all Day?
Mine probably couldn't do it all day and be able to have any comfort or enjoyment. I also doubt that most kids will wind up fully compliant, which can lead to outbreaks. That's a big part of why we are opting for remote.

Re: Kids Wearing Masks all Day?
There will be masks breaks at the teacher’s discretion in addition to lunch and recess. They’ll be wearing masks for most of the day. I’m glad our buildings are air conditioned because I can’t imagine anyone being comfortable wearing masks all day without some type of air circulating.

Re: Kids Wearing Masks all Day?
The district that my kids would have gone to it’s doing hybrid and as for right now the kids won’t have to wear masks when they’re sitting but they’ll have to put it on if they need to walk somewhere. If my kids would have gone to school and the school requires them to wear masks all day, I’d have pulled them. I just don’t see little ones being able to wear them 6, 7 hrs! If I have trouble wearing masks, I can’t even imagine how much more a little kid would! Plus we all know how not careful kids are, they love to touch everything, their hands are full of germs, etc. Adding to this all the other viruses that usually go around during winter time like cold, flu, stomach bug, those masks will be trapping all of these microorganisms increasing the chances for kids to get sick.

I agree. My district is the same. I’ll be honest. I don’t know why it is sad. Parents want their children in school and this is the safest way. Parents in my district are upset too about the masks. I know school won’t be normal but these aren’t normal times. I’m lucky my district can allow kids to go back full time. Parents would rather do a hybrid schedule which I think is crazy. How good is it to have your kids in school 2 days a week? Parents do not care that hybrid is a scheduling nightmare for the school. Parents in my district think they should have the choice for hybrid, remote, or full in person. But realistically how would that work? Initially my district only wanted to offer hybrid for kids with medical needs. I guess they thought parents wanted full time in school but it seems some were turned off by the mask requirements or maybe other reasons too.

I think it is the other way. The masks plus frequent hand washing will decrease transmission of those viruses. I may be wrong but I believe anything airborne gets trapped on the outer layer so it doesn’t get into your respiratory track.

This is correct. Every doctor I know has been telling everyone that the notion that masks are harmful is categorically false. This notion is dangerously untrue, but as long as people believe and repeat it, people will resist wearing masks and continue to spread the virus, harm others, and prolong this whole mess.

Exactly.
We are most likely sending my son but we are going to see what the cases are like in the next few weeks.
If I do I am looking forward to him maybe not getting the flu this year unlike the last two years thanks to the masks and hand washing.

Agreed. I'm homeschooling. Would personally not feel comfortable with sending my 5 year old to school in a mask for several hours for a variety of reasons. I also makes no sense to me when the kids are 6 feet apart.

What about kids touching a contaminated surface, removing the mask and putting it back on again with contaminated hands? Adjusting the mask wtith contaminated hands. There are strict guidelines for medical professionals using PPE. It is crazy to think little kids can follow them
