kindergarten and birthday invites...

SOO DS's birthday party is coming up in a month.
he has a small K class this year-- 16 kids including him.
With just our friends kids, we have 17 kids on the invite list right now, without inviting his class. The party cost covers up to 22 kids (but we can pay more per each kid we go over).
DS has 3 kids in his class that he wants to invite (all that he knows from preschool).
I can't just invite those 3, right?? I should invite the whole class to avoid hurt feelings if they talk about the party at school?? i'm new to the "Real school" thing LOL so not sure what the right thing to do is Chat Icon
If i did only invite the 3 DS talks about, i would mail invites and not hand them out at school...

Most of what I've seen is that they just can't hand out invitations in class unless they're given to everyone in class. I think it's ok to just invite his friends (mailed) and tell him not to talk about the party at school.

You can invite only 3, just don't hand the invitations out at school.

I might be in the minority but once school started we stopped having all our friends kids at DD's bday parties. The "kid party" was more for her school friends to help her start forming bonds with the kids she would be with for the next 12 years. In K and 1st we always invited all the kids in her class to help build friendships.

Thanks!! I thought about that, too.... our friends kids he sees maybe once a month if we get together on a weekend, but his school class he (obviously) sees every day. BUT our group of friends is DHs friends from high school (some middle school!!) that have stuck together all these years-- so i feel like we have to invite them. and DS does like playing with them when we all get together. But i'm definitely thinking for next year, we'll invite his class and not the friend's kids.. because you're right, especially in K/1st its important to start getting a bond going with the kids they see everyday...

We have been doing birthday parties with our friends kids. To me these parties are $$$ and I would rather spend that on our friends and family than strangers from my kids classes.

Edited to add that you could definitely just invite his friends from class. Just mail the invitations.

I'm going to be the devil's advocate here and say that I think you should invite the whole class.
It's the very beginning of the school year.. and inviting the whole class is a great way to introduce yourself to the other moms in the class etc. Also, I dont think you need to invite the whole class as they get older.. but Kindergarten always felt different to me. JMO
My son was in K last year and every party we were invited too had every kid in the class invited. It was so nice for everyone to be involved and get to know everyone

We just had DS's party a few weeks ago and we did only his school friends.

We were in the same both as you - friends outside of school was almost 20 (some are also DH's friends who has known since he was 11 as well).

In the end, it we felt it was easier that he have his friends from school since he sees them daily and they interact more than the friends outside of school (who he may see once a month if that).

Re: kindergarten and birthday invites...

DS's birthday is this weekend. He has so many friends from before K that we are already up to 25 kids. We invited only about 2 new people from this year. I did not pass out any invites at school. I wish we could include the whole class, but I invited who he likes to play with.

ETA: Our friends kids who he's known since birth are all in his school and sports teams and he sees them daily.

What about inviting all the boys from his class assuming the three he wants are all boys? This way all the boys are included and you will likely stay in our very close to your limit.

We also are not able to invite the people we used to invite. We are now moving onto school children. I have twins that started K. There is no way I can invite the whole class so just invited boys from both classes.
We are inviting a few new friends/family. It will be around 25. Now if they would start RSVP'ing...LOL

I would just invite the boys your son wants to invite. Mail the invites home. It's not a big deal. Kids don't get invited to everything, that's just the way life is. This doesn't bother my own kid. Maybe it bothers the parents more, who knows. But there is no reason to invite a bunch of kids your kid doesn't even want there.

Re: kindergarten and birthday invites...

I think it depends on a lot of things - finances, space, etc. My son is in 1st now and for pre-k, K, and now 1st, we have invited the whole class plus other kids we're friends with. It definitely helps with developing bonds with other kids. With schools allowing for less free time/play time in their curriculum, children have fewer opportunities to develop friendships. That being said, we had 27 kids at DS' party last year and it was expensive bc we had it at a jump place. His party is this weekend and so far we have 19 kids coming (class plus some friends), actually hoping no one else rsvps yes. He's excited and I really love birthdays so I enjoy doing it for my kids.

Amen!! I dealt with this for my dd's 4th bday party (the only one we've had with friends). It's the parents 100%. I went over the guest list with my dd 1000x. She wanted who she wanted and that was that. And I was perfectly fine with her decision.

I would invite only the 3 kids he wants at the party ad see no reason to invite the whole class or just the boys. Birthday parties aren't to make friends. They are to celebrate with your friends.

This. We only invited one kid from DS's class last year. He has a tight group of friends from daycare that he sees at before/after care and camp that we mainly invited. It's hard to invite everyone and it gets costly.

He only was invited to 4 birthday parties last year for his class. There were 17 kids in total. I know a lot of the kids had parties (mainly girls) and they didn't invite him so I didn't feel too badly.

No reason to invite the whole class. That's life. If I invited the whole class I wouldn't have room for friends or family. I say to my kids, your close friends will invite you and you will invite them. Not everybody has to always be best friends and invite each other, as long as you are nice to everyone, that's good.

Re: kindergarten and birthday invites...

We only invited the girls from her K class.
We invited ALL the girls though- didn't pick and chose.
It was a gymnastics party - and while boys are always welcome there, it just felt more of a 'girl' thing. We did have her male cousins though and they loved it.

Plus it's what we could afford.
As long as you aren't handing invites out in class (which we aren't allowed to do anyway) and making others feel left out, then I see no issue with only inviting a few. That's life.

As far as meeting the mom's that wasn't even on my radar.
I'm very anti social so I don't care to make mom friends to be honest.

Re: kindergarten and birthday invites...

I am considering have a party for my son who is in K. We just went to a few parties for classmates. My son doesn't tell me a lot of detail about school, but the day before the party he did tell me who else was going, so I think the kids talk. I wouldn't have the heart not to invite all of the boys. What if there are 1-2 boys who are quiet, etc and don't socialize as much? I wouldn't have the heart to exclude them. I plan on inviting all of the boys in his class.
