Kindergarten Dilemma-long

Hi all..
We have a kindergarten CTT class and have noticed that they (obviously, as it is developmentally appropriate for ALL of them) cannot sit on the rug for long periods of time. This would not be a problem IF we did not have the Treasures reading program, which I love, but takes the kids to the carpet for long stretches of time. My co-teacher and I are trying to think of ways to finish what's at least required for the day while having the kids absorb..we noticed it's the same kids getting it and the same kids not..so we know we need to switch some things up...one thing we were thinking was doing guided reading in the middle (after the morning message section) to break things up and give the kids some time to get attention and focus in small groups...if you've come this far, thanks, and any suggestions would be helpful-we are pretty flexible, again, as long as we get done what is "required" for the day. Thanks!

I don't know what CCT is but it sounds like breaking it up is a good idea. It's hard for young kids to stay at the mat for a long time. When I taught self contained I always had my kids moving back and forth. Is there part of the lesson that could be done at their desks? I used to start at the mat, have them go back to their desks for a story or something and then go back to the mat for the lesson. I'm not sure how your program works but it sounds like you're on the right track with breaking it up.

Thanks..CTT is collaborative team teaching-we have a 60/40 split between special ed. and regular ed. students...we were thinking about the rug to seat approach..thanks...guess we have to start some trial and error...

I agree with the above. It's hard for kindergarteners to concentrate when they sit for so long. I used to have mine stop for "stand up and stretch" breaks, do part of the lesson at their seat and part on the floor, have one carpet place in the room for direct instruction and another carpet for story time, even have them stay in their carpet spots but spin around 180 degrees backwards and I'd go stand over there and teach for a change of scenery... mixing it up will help.

I have to say, I think that doing part of the lesson at their seats might be a good idea for me!

Like another poster said, I do try to get themto do jumping jacks or stretch periodically. They do have attention spans of gnats!Chat Icon

Re: Kindergarten Dilemma-long

We definitely do singing, dancing, and moving periodically...the seats might have to come into play as well..sometimes I feel bad for them!!
