Kindergarten Homework Help
First let me say I am usually a good speller.
Ryan had to draw a picture and if he could write about it. I am helping him with spelling and of course he wants to write about playing invisible superheros at the BBQ.
Now I am afraid I will make him spell something wrong, and spell check is telling me my two BBQ spellings are right and the right superhero spelling looks wrong to me.
so...
superheros OR superheroes
barbecue OR Barbeque
Help, and boy am I in trouble, this is first homework in kindergarten, what am I gonna do in 5th grade

I did a search and come up with both spellings as correct for either word.
Maybe one of the teachers will chime in.

you should have him spell and write it his own way. that's probably what the teacher wants unless she said otherwise.
the teacher is not going to care about the spelling

this is what i found on dh's dictionary program on his computer:
barbeque |'bärbi?kyoo|
noun & verb
a common misspelling of barbecue.
USAGE This common form arises understandably from a confused conflation of the proper spelling barbecue, the abbreviation Bar-B-Q, and phonetic spelling. Its frequency does not quite justify it: in no other English word does que attain the status of a stand-alone, terminal syllable.
eta: i agree with pp though about inventive spelling in kindergarten, it's totally appropriate!!

I am a teacher and my son is in first grade. In kindergarten teachers like kids spell or inventive spelling. He should sound out the words and write what he thinks
an example is : candy - if he writes kande that is fine.

the homework said specifically we could help them spell but he had to write and draw on his own.
but I thought about doing it that way, and probably should . he can spell some easy words like fun so he gets sounding it out, but I am afraid he would get too frustrated trying to spell invisible or barbeque and give up.

Im a kindergarten teacher and I would have him try and write what he can and either under what he writes or on a post-it white what he is trying to spell. Also don't worry about the proper spelling of heroes or BBQ...the teacher probably won't even think about it.

Its done and I wont make me change it even if it was wrong.
I do think next time I will make him do the inventive spelling thing.
It just felt so funny that I had to give kindergarten homework a second thought.
