Kindergarten! What do our kids need to know?
What do the kids need to know by the time they get to kindergarten? Do they do a screening?  thanks

Write/say their name
Recite:
their address, phone number, date of birth, age, alphabet, numbers 1-50, count by 10s to 100, even/odd numbers 1-11, colors, shapes
Draw:
numbers 1-10, a picture of a person (head, face, body, arms, hands, legs, feet), circle, square, triangle.
Physical activity:
cut paper, jump, throw, catch, build a block tower, manipulate objects, follow simple directions, get themselves dressed, go to the bathroom by themselves for 1 and 2.

They do a screening, and it's not a pass/fail screening.
I've never heard the counting by 10's or knowing odd/even numbers. I don't think I know any children in pre-k that can do that. The rest I knew of.

I agree. My DD didn't get tested on this during her screening, nor was she tested on counting to 50. She did, however, learn all of these things in Kindergarten.

this is similar to the list we were given for Pre-K (Junior Kindergarden here)
DD can do all this and more so i know she is more than ready for school.
I asked my mom to get some of the school work for kids for us for the summer once school is out at the end of June so i can work with her some more.

Counting by 10s and the even/odd numbers thing was something DS was taught this year in preschool.

I agree. Counting by tens, odd/even numbers and counting to fifty is not something we screened for when I worked in elementary. The rest is pretty right on.
Remember though, just bc we screen for these skills does not mean a child has to be able to do all of them.

I taught Kindergarten. None of the kids came in knowing odd or even numbers, only a few could count past 20, most kids drew people with arms and legs coming out of the head and maybe one kid was able to count by 10's.
Realistically, as long as they can count to about 20, know their ABC's, know basic shapes, can spell their name, and know their colors they should be ok. Also, as stated above.......they should be able to follow basic directions, jump , throw, etc.
