Kindergartener being "too good"

My DS is 5 (just turned) and is a very good boy usually. In school, he is almost too good- never pushes or plays aggressive, follows rules but he daydreams ALOT. It drives me crazy at home and I know the teacher is becoming annoyed. The whole class will finish a project or eating lunch and he's still taking his time working on it.. and he gets very nervous when anyone- teacher or me- tries to have him do something new. Is this normal for a 5 year old? He participates well in after school activities, knows everything expected for kindergarten, can already read small words. He's just not an assertive child and I don't know how to help him become more confident. Chat Icon

He does play soccer and swimming. I was thinking ab signing him up for that! You think it would help? He's an only child so I think that plays a part with his pace. I'm going to look into it today :)

My nephew is an only child too! lol

and even though he is with my 3 all the time, he still has the typical only child syndrome.. :O)

Ack this sounds like J too, not sure if she daydreams, but defintely does not like to be rushed. It is almost like she is an only child because her brother is 18 and away at college

Re: Kindergartener being "too good"

Yea i'm really starting to think kids who are only children are at a different pace brain wise but are just as smart as other kids. I guess siblings keep each other moving while only children just go as they please. It just gets me mad that he knows all of his stuff yet when the teacher asks him to do things, he gets upset or daydreams and doesn't do it- therefore, she thinks he can't. I'm def doing the tae-kwon-do. Calling them tonight!

This sounds exactly like I was when I was in kindergarten. I am 6 years older than my brother so I was an only for those first few years. He sounds completely board. I am sure he can do the work, see if there is a gifted and talented program in your school and have him evaluated for that. I think his teacher is just not reaching him. See if you can get "more advanced work." It was what I needed. Once I was challenged I was fine.

Re: Kindergartener being "too good"

Yes his teacher was mentioning the fact that she has 25 children in her class and no helper after 11.. so I really am worried that he is being over-looked :( No gifted programs in long beach unfortunately.
