the books or newspapers are downloaded to the device, then you read it on the device.
the books are about $9.99 each

It synchs up to your Amazon account. You can buy and download books from Amazon either on your computer or directly on the Kindle. You can also download magazines, newspapers, blogs and other stuff directly from the Kindle.
Books are usually about $9.99, but some are less expensive, and there are some good free ones out there if you can find them.
