We got this for my son for Christmas too - not the HD version though.
Have you checked out the FREETIME? That's what we're planning to use. I think you can subscribe for maybe $3/month and there are numerous free apps. I haven't done it on the actual Kindle Fire yet though.

I was just reading something about the "freetime" plan. I have no clue about any of this stuff. Not sure which services to pay for. And what apps to get. I will look into the freetime service again. Thanks.
Anyone else have any recommendations ?

Re: Kindle fire HD, apps for preschoolers?
Freetime is actually a free app that comes with the tablet. It lets you create a profile for your child and you can set it up with just the apps/games/books that you want them to have access to. They just came out with a new freetime service for a few dollars a month, but I don't see the point of it when you can download so many apps for free and the ones that aren't free are only a dollar or so each. I have to look into it further to see what the benefit of it is.
Some of the ones my son likes are the Daniel Tiger's neighborhood app, SuperWhy app, and of course Angry Birds. You can search through the app store on the kindle or on amazon and find tons of free apps for preschoolers.
