Kitchen designer
I'm looking for reccommendations for a kitchen designer. I'm redoing my kitchen soon and lucky enough to have a family friend who volunteered to do labor for free! I will be gutting existing kitchen and knocking down a wall so I have many options for designs and could use some help. I don't really want to spend more than $2000 on designs and the one designer I saw online wanted $5000 for designs!! Anyway I would love any recs you could give.
TIA!

Re: Kitchen designer
If you want to take a chance, you can post an ad for free design service from a graduate who's looking to build up her/his portfolio.
Perhaps put an ad on craigslist or at a design school?
I paid about 2k for a designer too and think hiring an experienced designer is overrated. Esp. for more than 2k! My designer was experienced but made some mistakes and pushed me towards products that were too pricey for my taste....

Re: Kitchen designer
I have been using Jeff Boico of Classic Kitchens in Roslyn. He is amazing...an artist. He has gone over and over the designs for my kitchen and bathrooms. He works great with me as well as the contractors. His company has been around for 40 years. Each decision is entirely thought out by him. He is very good and a lovely man.

Re: Kitchen designer
Thanks for the suggestions girls. Unforfortunately Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly looks like they're $5,000 so they're out. And we tried home depot but they really kept showing me the same layout i have, they weren't very helpful. But I will definitely look into the other 2 suggestions!

Re: Kitchen designer
we used a woman in the home depot in hempstead and she was awesome. The guy we met with at Consumers had no good ideas and just put things wherever I told him (and I have no clue!) Let me know if you want her name.

Re: Kitchen designer
For our last kitchen, we used home depot. Had a great experience with Susan at the HD in East Northport (she has since done kitchens for my parents and my in-laws)
For the kitchen we're doing now, we went to two professional kitchen designers/contractors for layouts (neither of which charged us). One offered up our existing layout and was a naysayer to all our ideas. The other was willing to listen to what we wanted, but didn't offer enough to warrant his price ($20k more than HD) and his cabinet styles were more traditional than we wanted.
Bottom line, we would up back at home depot again!

I would go to a different one or go back and ask for someone who has experience with changing layouts, etc. It's worth another try since the price is right.

A friend of mine does beautiful kitchens. Not sure how much it costs but she works for Florence Building Supply. They have a kitchen design department and her name is Stephanie. www.florencekitchens.com

Us too! The first guy we saw was a dud.. but then we went back and got a great woman who really helped pull everything together.

Re: Kitchen designer
Just so you know, Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly's fee is not $5000 unless you are purchasing detailed plans/design and taking them with you elsewhere to shop for cabinetry. The in-store consultation is FREE (see article below). If you go ahead and have us come to your home, design your kitchen, and draw up your detailed plans, elevations, & perspectives the fee is $1500 which is applied towards your cabinet purchase... so the plans and designs are free when applied to purchase.
