Kitchen flooring next to hardwood floors?
I'm looking for ideas/opinions on what would look good in a kitchen next to medium/light colored thin board hardwoods. We have an open floor plan and our entire house is the same hardwoods. Our kitchen currently has tile, which we will be ripping out.
I originally thought I wanted to just match the hardwoods we have but have been told that would be pretty difficult, not to mention messy since the entire first floor would have to be sanded and refinished. I really want wood or wood tile but I'm concerned that it won't look good next to the real hardwoods. Also, I love the darker stained, barn wood look but I don't think it would go since the floors will be side by side in several areas.
The rest of the kitchen will be white shaker cabinets, subway tile, grey or black counters (not sure yet of granite, quartz or soapstone) farm sink, stainless appliances. I can't imagine what besides wood floors would look right with this.
We have a decorator coming but I want to get some ideas first. I'm not seeing any tile that I like. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Sounds similar to my kitchen.. and we had the same question.. I opted for a wood looking porceline tile.. similar to this http://www.builddirect.com/Porcelain-Tile/Black/ProductDisplay_6933_p1_10083586.aspx I didn't want the maintaince of wood on my kitchen floors.

Kitchen flooring next to hardwood floors?
We are getting Dark Slate flooring put in next to our wood floors. Kitchen cabinets are grey, counters white and not sure on back splash yet.

The slate is a good option that I hadn't thought of.
Thank you both!

We just remodeled whole first floor and went with wood. I'm so happy we did. White shaker cabinets, quartzite, marble subway backsplash.

Re: Kitchen flooring next to hardwood floors?
We're doing the exact same scheme beginning next month! I live in a Colonial, so it doesn't have an open floor plan, really, but the dining room does open into the kitchen via a doorway (which we are widening slightly). The dining room has hardwood of a lighter shade than what I'm planning for the kitchen. I asked the designer if it would be odd and she said, "Not at all!" so that's what I'm going with!
Good luck with the renovations...we should commiserate once we're underway

That's good to hear about the floors! We won't be starting for several months but eventually we'll get there. Would love to hear any tips/recommendations!
