KJ is still having reflux issues
He was on Zantac and we switched him to Axid about 10 days ago. He STILL screams / creis while eating his bottle, takes big gulps and drinks feverishly for a few seconds, then cries and pulls off the bottle....does this sound reflux related? he was never a spitter upper (the doctor said he has silent reflux)
I think I may place a call to the ped on monday

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
Sounds like reflux to me. Does he do it with every feeding? Derek does this occasionally also but not at every feeding so I dont know if it is just gas or reflux. I would imagine if it was reflux it would be constant, right?

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
This same exact thing was/is happening with my son. I think it is a mix of silent reflux and gas. WHen he has to go to the bathrroom during a feedign he strains and passes gas and this is when I notice it the most (the fussing during eating, eating like a maniac then stopping etc). On a better note, he has been doing much better. We still have a few episodes here and there but they are much more managable and for the most part he is a very happy boy. He is currently taking axid three times a day and probiotics every other day. I don't really know whether is is his system just maturing, the axid or the probiotics that are helping, it is like one big guessing game. Why don't you try probiotics, they can't hurt and can only get some good bacteria into his belly.

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
It almost sounds like it may be a milk pro allergy issue or GER. Although, after reading eczema I immedietly think allergy. Some symptoms are:
excessive crying blood/mucous in stool runny nose wheezin eczema pulling knees into chest
I would first try gentlease. It is a partially hydrolyzed formula w/reduced lactose. The benefit is that it is an in between formula of routine and hypoallergenic. If this doesn't work, I would recommend going with nutramigen w/enflora lgg. It is the only one on the market with the probiotics in it - which not only help add good bacteria, but heals any damage caused by the allergy.
HTH!! Keep me posted!

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
If he has a milk pro allergy I would come off of a soy product. Recommendations by the AAP are that any baby even with questionable milk pro allergy not use soy formula b/c it often leads to a soy allergy. When little one has allergy, gut membranes become permeable allowing soy proteins to cross intestinal mucousa and go directly into blood stream, and likely casuing soy allergy. Bring this up with your pediatrician, he/she should know about this. I would then 100% recommend nutraminen w/enflora lgg.

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
Sounds so much like Reflux to me..Noah did the same thing...Luckily we were ok with Zantac and Gentlease.
I would see a Ped Gastro if you havent already and have them check him out more. Check to make sure there is no soy allergy and then monitor him for the meds? I heard many do well on Prevacid?
Also try Mylanta...We do 1 cc ( ml) twice a day ( max dose 4 times a day )...for Chloe, but she's small, He may need more.
Hang int here.
If it is silent reflux, the good news is that it often passes early on in development I read.

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
declan has/had the same issues. He is on gentlease formula, takes .8 of axid twice a day and i was giving him mylicon with every feeding but thank god, it's starting to disappear. The doctor said that basically he's going to have to outgrow it :( you could always ask your doctor if you should switch formulas, maybe a soy base formula. also, since declan's been eating oatmeal cereal it's helped a lot

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
I would start with a visit to a GI. This is a specific problem and a specilaist will be better equipped to help your LO. I can highly recommend one in the Babylon area if you are nearby/interested?
Your LO may need what DS did, prescription formula and meds.
Hang in there...this will get better!!! DS is now 18 months and completely over the reflux and he had a severe case of silent refllux.

Re: KJ is still having reflux issues
My son was just diagnosed this past tuesday with a milk protein/soy allergy and reflux. He is on Nutramigen. It has no dairy or soy in it. He is also on Mylanta. Just started that today. After one dose, it seems to have helped him. Our pedi GI is located at Scneider's Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park.

I agree...my doc. said no soy if they are allergic to milk.
Also, Soy is not good for boys.
Copied and pasted
The dangers of soy for men are a result of the high levels of the female hormone estrogen that soy and soy-based products contain. Primarily, soy affects the quality and concentration of a male’s sperm, especially if taken in large quantities or if the subject was exposed to high levels in the womb. A recent study at Harvard University showed that there was a definite correlation between men with low sperm counts and a high intake of soy foods. The study revealed that the average sperm concentration of 80 to 120 million per millimeter of an adult male was more than halved when soy formed part of the diet. The case is more compelling in the study of obese males whose sperm levels are even lower owing to the estrogen making properties of fat tissue.

same here. Depending on the severity, we were told Nutrimagen (mild) or Elecare/Neocate (severe). Most milk allergy babies don't do well on Alimentuim.
Also ask your GI for prevacid (I don't believe a ped can prescribe it - at least mine wouldn't.) My DS had silent reflux and could not tolerate any other meds (Zantac, Pepcid, Axid.)

I've also read that will say Soy is not good for girls either. I'm no expert but read enough, that made me limit the amount of soy products I give my children. My neice who is 6 was milk sensitive and she drank soy milk for years. It did some pretty weird things to her and since stopping soy products she is much better.
