Knives
I want a really nice set of knives for Christmas. I hate my set, they are old and well suc. What are some nice knives (block with steak knives and all the big ones) that won't break someone elses bank.

Re: Knives
I really love my Henckels knives, a starter set is quite expensive but so worth it. I have had mine for about 10 years. Wustoff is also a good knife.

We have Cutco knives and they are great. They are $$ but you can pick and choose the sets. My SIL has Henkel knives and she still ordered these.

Re: Knives
I had to physically handle different brands before coming to a decision. I knew above anything else that I wanted a forged knife - "forged from a single piece of high carbon, no-stain steel".
Henkels felt too light in my hand - the blade was heavy but the handle was light so it was top heavy and uncomfortable for me.
I liked the look of the Global brand but the handle was too slippery for me.
In the end we went with the Wusthof Classic. It was the heaviest and felt the most comfortable in my hand.
Honestly, I think you only need a 8" Chef (utility) knife and/or Santoku, paring knife and a serated (bread) knife. I don't cook meat so I've never even used the boning knife. I use the Santoku 99% of the time - it is a fantastic knife.
edited for spelling.

Re: Knives
if you want to stick to around $100, my rec would be Sabatier Loire - we got a set of these knives as a shower gift from B,B&B. they're really good.
but if I had more $ to spend, I would get this set

Re: Knives
I have the Henkels and they are good. They are top heavy which is great for carving a turkey!
I have a Wustof Santoku and I just bought a Wustof 4 inch chef knife. I really like the Wustof knives.
If you can afford it, getting good knives will last you a long time.
If you don't really cook that much then expensive knives are a waste.

Me too I looooove my Cutco knives and although I paid a small fortune for the set I chose they are so worth it. I wish I would've gotten them sooner.

I have to "3rd" the cutco knives. They are amazing and stay sharp much longer than my Henckles

Make sure the metal goes all the way through the handle.

Re: Knives
We got this Oxo Block set for our wedding. It was rated by Consumer Reports as their Best Buy and we've been really happy with it. Good knives that won't break the bank
