Ladies - PSA on bills you receive from Quest
If anyone ever received a large bill from Quest, saying that insurance wouldn't cover it for whatever reason, please make sure you follow up and figure out what it is and why you have to pay it.
In August, I received a $693.00 bill from Quest!
I was devastated - I stressed about how we were going to pay it. But I wanted to call and figure out what it was - everything was written in code - you know, medical speak.
I called them. They couldn't tell me what the tests were for, but they said they were duplicate tests, and thats why my insurance wouldnt cover it.
I'm not sure how many women from the pregnancy board remember me posting about going for blood tests and taking out over 20 vials of blood?
I was convinced thats what it had to be.
so I called my dr. office. The medical assistant remembered when I told her about that. When she heard the cost, she said, "thats ridiculous - you aren't paying it. I'm putting a hold on this bill right now so they can investigate what it was about."
End of the story - I just found out from the medical assistant and some one from Quest that the bill was an accident, and I didn't have to pay...
But.. what if I was stupid enough just to pay it, and not ask???
Truth is, if it were for a smaller amount, I may not have pursued it - I mean, 100 or even 200 dollars. It was the amunt that got me...
How many "mistakes" have they sent out - on purpose or by accident, that got paid without a question?

The majority of bills have mistakes on them.
I found items, on my dad's bills, that were covered that he never even had or appts. I had to reschedule weeks in advance but were still submitted to the insurance as a visit. Medicare is even worse
Everyone should check every single bill they get very carefully.

Re: Ladies - PSA on bills you receive from Quest
Quest is horrible! I have had so many similar experiences with them - mostly from my high risk pregnancy. Apparantely they have not only been scamming customers, but insurance companies as well as I recently received a letter from our insurance (Oxford) that they will no longer participate with Quest and all blood work must be done elsewhere. I wonder how many insurance companies double paid them for the same tests...ugh!

I had a car accident in Febrauary- we took DD to the Er. We are still gettting 'bills' in October. Everytime I call them , they say " Oh don't worry. Its been taken care of" Well, then why are you still sending it to me?? ***? You're right, they are counting on ppl who will just pay the measly 100 or 200 bucks. Tell me how thats not fraud?

Empire BC/BS also dropped them. They lost all of the NYS employees plans... that's a lot of people.

Quest still take Empire BC/BS. I verified 2x before I went to get my blood work for my kidney testing last week. I've always used quest for blood work and its always been covered. Just got my EOB and I owe nothing.

Sorry, I was just talking about the Empire BC/BS State Employees Plan (United Healthcare). They no longer pay for any tests from Quest as of Jan 1. I had bloodwork done while pg on one of the first days in Jan. I told my OB that I received a letter in the mail that Qwest would not be covered so not to send the blood to that lab. They did, my insurance would not pay it. Because it was their mistake the OB's office wound up eating the bill.

Re: Ladies - PSA on bills you receive from Quest
I had a similar thing happen with Quest. I got a bill from them for like $1000 for the first round of blood work that was done for the PG while on maternity leave. I thought OMG how the he!! am I going to pay this! And then got a bill a week later with the same invoice # for my co-pay.

Re: Ladies - PSA on bills you receive from Quest
yea Quest has some racket- do you know they sent me bills- my insurance company paid them- ( I keep and file everything) then 9 months later I get a letter from a collection agency for 7 unpaid bills from quest- well I got my insurance paperwork showing they were paid a long time ago- faxed it to the collection company and never heard from them again! I wonder how many people really check. They werent large large amounts but enough to add up to around 500.00
