Ladies w/ heartburn- some tips from an article in Fit Pregnancy mag
I had heartburn in my first tri, and in the last week or so it's been back, and really, really bad. There was an article with some good tips that I thought I'd pass along:
- Eat smaller meals (6 a day) with no more than a cup and a half of food at one sitting. - Know your "trigger foods"- common culprits are greasy/fried things, carbonated drinks, spicy things, chocolate and citrus fruits. - Eat your last meal at least 3 hours before bed, and sleeping on your left side is a good idea because it keeps the acid down. - Smoothies, soups and other liquid based things are good because they are easier to digest, and pregnant womens' digestive systems are more sluggish. - Chew your food really, really well- this also makes digestion a little easier.
Something else I read that wasn't in this article had to do with drinks-supposedly liquids dilute your digestive juices, making it harder for food to digest. You should drink as little as possible while eating a meal- I used to drink at least 2 big glasses of water during meals and so did DH, and we'd both get heartburn. We noticed a difference when we cut back- I'd just have a couple sips instead.
Hope this helps! I started eating smaller meals yesterday and I had some heartburn at night, but not as bad as usual.
