Landscaper Doing Spring Clean up Now? Really?

So I got a message today that spring clean up would start the week of 3/20. Umm what the ____ is he going to clean? Nothing! And charge me $300 dollars for it?

Is this normal?

Is grass even growing by 3/20???????

He knows us so we are stuck with him and I think he takes advantage of us ..............

When does your landscaper start this?

I live in a co-op complex but ours came today. They mostly used the leaf blowers & cleaned up fallen tree branches.

Ours said he was starting at the end of March too. I guess since it was such a mild winter they're confident it's going to be an early spring.

Re: Landscaper Doing Spring Clean up Now? Really?

I am calling him tomorrow and telling him not to do spring clean up. There are no leaves on my property and I have a lot of trees, LOL!

I should just buy a lawnmover and pay myself to do this!!!!!! If only I had the time! :)

I know I sound so cheap but I work PT now so I want to be more caution with my $.

My mother has owned a house for 35 years and has never treated her lawn with chemicals and her lawn looks the same as mine, probably better! Mine is full of weeds and is crappy.

I am going to tell him no treatments this year.

Do you think my lawn will really turn?

It really looks like crap even with the expensive treatments he does.

I should just go to HD and buy a cheap bag myself!

We are in the same position, we are telling them no treatment and dh will have to do the spring cleanup. Its just too much money . I saw another landscaper today at my neighbors house. Seriously way too early to be cutting grass .

I am actually cancelling my landscaper this year and buying a lawn mower. Since sears is closing a bunch of stores in Suffolk I will be going there to pick up a lawn mower

The only thing I ever do to my lawn is pick up the leaves in the fall, and cut every once in a while during the warm weather. I never water, fertilize, or weed. Most of the year, it looks almost the same as the yards with pros taking care of it.

Re: Landscaper Doing Spring Clean up Now? Really?

Every year around March 20th, DH and I go out back and throw down Grass Seed, Compost Manure,Top Soil, and Peat Moss down. In localized areas we put down crab grass & clover killer. We water then water about every 4 days and our grass starts out really lush and beautiful. I keep the kids off the area for 4 weeks (which is usually not a problem because it's still cold, except this year it's pretty warm, lol) until most of the stuff is absorbed.

It costs us under $100 (probably closer to $75)

April is when your legally allowed to do any chemical treatments - unless they are just thatching, adding lime/compost and doing leave cleanup they shoudn't be putting down anything until April.

This exactly... its time to "open" for the season... start seeding.. treating and trimming...

ill be starting to treat my lawn in the next week or so... putting down stuff to kill off any type of seeds that may have been left over the winter.. weeds, etc.. then in about 5 weeks ill start seeding...

Re: Landscaper Doing Spring Clean up Now? Really?

We have paid for fertilizer and all sorts of crap for 5 years and my lawn is nothing special. My landscaper also asked me in the past if I wanted him to weed for me an my property always looks maintained. Umm i said no because i think he thinks i am made of $$ or somethig!!! We know him distantly so I think he just tries to rip us off. This year I will end the fertilizer b/c I work part-time and giving him my money is annoying, lol!!

What I was thinking. The only thing that's legal is that the company using the chemicals should have a license. If they don't and they are caught they get some hefty fines.

Re: Landscaper Doing Spring Clean up Now? Really?

I think that's right on time. I'm actually hoping our landscapers come earlier! There's lots to clean up - twigs, dried up leaves, beds need to be refreshed as flowers are coming up already.

ETA: They can start fertilizing April 1st. Last year our lawn looked better than it ever, according to our neighbor who's lived here about 25 yrs. Chat Icon

Go to HD and get the bag and do it yourselves. DH does my lawn and it looks like a landscaper does it. he can tell you what to buy, it will probably save you $250 lol

I hadn't heard this either, but it's true. You can't apply fertilizer before April 1st.

We got a letter from our landscapes that said the same thing. I didn't think twice about it, but I'm now wondering if I should have?

Re: Landscaper Doing Spring Clean up Now? Really?

My dad owns a landscaping company and is starting cleanups next week so I dont think its too early. Also, they dont cut this early..cutting doesnt start until all the cleanups are done and the grass is actually growing...maybe May?
If they are going over your lawn with something that looks like a mower it is probably an aerator or mulcher or power rake (this is most likely since it gets all the dead grass up).
