Landscaping ? Are hedges "out"?
We're redoing the entire front of our house, the masonry is finished, we have new steps, walkway, stoop, etc. Now we're on the planting phase and getting suggestions from landscapers. One is saying we should put a hedge of boxwood across the front of the house (with other plantings around it of course), but for some reason I thought hedges were kinda dated. Is this my imagination? I want a fresh look and hedges just keep making me think of the 80's.

OMG - I LOVE hedges. Don't let my DH hear you guys say they're out.
When they're trimmed and tidy and all nice and neat - I think they just look so sharp.
I love the look of hedges - sorry I'm no help.

I think they are out. Plus, they are a lot of upkeep to look nice. Growing up we lived in a corner house, with hedges all the way from the front and around the corner to the back. And it was my job to clip them.

Re: Landscaping ? Are hedges "out"?
hedges are beautiful IMO but yes it takes dedication and upkeep to keep them going. I actually just planting a row of hollies but it will be years before they grow into one single row.
You can however do small grass plantings then mix with annuals (grass in center) just depends if you soil/sun. Another thing I have seen is mini box woods then dwarf grasses then perennials/annuals filling in.
