What are some things you need to look for when purchasing a lap top?

Re: lap top questions
Weight is probably the biggest thing to look at. I have a powerful laptop for work, but it is a pain in my neck (literally, I carry it on my shoulder and it is *heavy*!) DVD player minimum, DVD writer is better. (You can watch movies that way). Wireless network (so you can sit in the backyard with a cocktail during the summer, posting on LIF... ) For most uses, almost any new laptop will have plenty of power and memory (1GB RAM at least) to do almost anything you need.

Re: lap top questions
Definitely get one with 1g of RAM. It's harder and costlier to upgrade laptops than desktops, so try to get the features you want. I have an iBook G4 (the don't make this anymore, now there's Macbook), and it really comes withe verything you need right out of the box. You defintiely want it to include wirelss capability as well as blue tooh if you want to use wireless mouse, etc. If you want to use it to watch movies or graphic design, get a larger screen (mine is 14" and It's more than big enough to use for photos, etc). Weight is a factor too. How portable does it need to be? I have a bad back and I had no problem bringing ti back and forth to school provided I had a decent parking spot.
I really love the Mac because it came with EVERY thing you could possibly need, and it's made of aircraft grade plastic, and ahs a special locking mechanism to protect the harddrive if you drop the computer. My laptop survived several bangs and drops while closed..unfortunately nothing was going to help when I dropped it screen first onto the corner of a table If you can get accidental damange protection, I say get it! I have Apple Care, but it does not incliude this
