Large SUV spinoff: I saw my first Smart car on U.S. soil

It was traveling eastbound on the Northern Pkwy near Jericho. It caught me by surprise. Nice color...neon green/yellow.

I'd love one.

Probably the only car where I can comfortably reach the steering wheel, at 5ft.

WE saw the dealership from I-95 in CT this weekend on our way to Mohegan Sun. At least I think it was!

Could be. They have about 8-9 dealerships in the TriState area

I just edited my post because it was the New Haven/West Haven area near the split for Rt. 91, so it wasn't Hartford!

while at the Dr's office last week, I read one of those car magazines about this car. it was a 4 or 5 page review.

they drove it for several 1000 miles and said that b/c it only has 3 cyl and it quite heavy for the amount of power it has, they never got more than 38 MPG on the highway (and at some points, only 28 MPG). the reviewer said that you need to keep your foot to the floor at all times.

it is cute though and very cheap! ($12k I think), I would consider getting one as an extra car Chat Icon

I saw one on the LIE as well. The size scares me though. I don't think I'd feel comfortable in something that small...

There is a smart car dealership in Smithtown. I do not like these cars at all. I think they are actually expensive for what you get. One of the models goes for almost 15k. I could go and get a Nissan sentra or Honda Civic for that price. I probably would get the same gas mileage, and I would actually have a back seat and trunk space.

Something like this:

They also make a 4-seater, a 1-seater, and a Cabriolet version...tho I'm not sure of the availability of these here in the States.

I agree. I wouldn't want to be on the highway with one. They are meant for city driving. Imagine being on one of those on the LIE and getting into an accident with an SUV travelling 70mph? You wouldn't have a chance.
