Late talkers..
Just curious..
DS is 19 months and doesn't have a big vocabulary. He says just a few words..
nye-nye for 'nite nite' mommy + daddy cookie lieeee for 'light' diiii ehhhh for 'Did It'
but that's IT! I know alot of 18 month olds in some of our playgroups are already having EI come for their speech development. Just wondering when I should start to be concerned.....
Is it normal for 19 month boys to ONLY have a handful of words? Some of the other kids his exact age answer questions and follow directions already.. It's so hard to not compare. Do I talk to the Ped or is he OK?

Re: Late talkers..
I think it is ok as long as he understands you.
You can always call EI for an eval. if you are worried.

Re: Late talkers..
my 23 month old DD has a very small vocabulary. She was evaluated by EI but didn't qualify because she understands everything. Call if it makes you feel better, it made me feel a little better.

I think each situation is different. When EI does an evaluation they also take into account a child's receptive language. It really depends on how much your DC understands. If you are concerned you should definitely call EI.

Re: Late talkers..
My youngest son was a late talker. Had about 5 words he used regularly at 18 mos and just under 50 at 2. He understood everything and his receptive language was very high. My ped said with that to wait until he was 2 to see what happened - she didn't think he'd qualify anyway - and sure enough then he exploded. 2 months after he tirned 2 I lost count of the number of words he said. EI is free so if that gives you peace of mind - go for it. I am one not to rush things so I waited and glad I did. He does have some articulation issues now. Had him tested at 3.5ish and his vocab was 95%ile though. His artic was low and he qualified for articulation but even before I started speech - new sounds came he didn't have when he tested so it is all coming with age and speech is moving other sounds along. He is almost 5 now.

Re: Late talkers..
My DD was a late talker...she only had a few words by 20 months. Ped said as long as she understands everything and is pointing or grunting to get things, that is fine. She came around right after her 2nd bday & now at 29 months she never stops talking.

I can't wait to write those words!
He sounds fine to me and they probably would want to wait till he turns two to see what happens, but call if it will give you some peace of mind!
