moms of late talkers?

how old was your dc when they said their 1st real word?

was their receptive language (what they understood) better?

when/did their language skills catch up?

(sorry for asking all these questions again. Thanks!)

Re: moms of late talkers?

I know this doesn't help but I thought I'd add that my nephew is 20 months old and not even babbling yet. My sister is waiting until he is 2 to do anything.

DS said Dada at 12 months. By 24 months he said mama and dada and alot of babble. Ped was concerned but he was not eligible for early intervention. At 30 months he said over 100 different words putting three word sentences together. Thats what the call Word Explosion Chat Icon

Re: moms of late talkers?

Im not a speech pathologist..I know we do have a few on here..but I'll try and answer as best as I can from experience..although not with my own kids..

In general a childs receptive language will be better than his expressive language. (at this age that is unless there are other issues going on)..

Another thing to consider is that a lot of the times the child is "talking" you just dont understand him/her.

Example: Caden definitely calls his father "daddy" It just comes out more as DA..a first time parent just might not catch it..does that make sense???

Im catching that you are concerned with DS language skills. At his age I really wouldnt worry at all (easier said than done I know)..somewhere between now and 2 you are going to start seeing a greater explosion of words. Listen carefully he may have some words already for some of his favorite things...
