Layoffs NYC info from UFT meeting
So my UFT person said that while he is unsure if there will be layoffs we should know that it really could happen this time around
They be as follows:
Last one hired, first one out
It will be across all departments, but proprotional for ex: say there are 8% SS teachers in NYC and 3% Art--it is more likely as an Art teachers you will get laid off with more senority bc there are less Art teachers.
They will layoff one SS teacher, then one math, then one Guidance etc (go around to each department) before they layoff the 2nd SS teacher
I hope this makes sense....
Let's pray this does not happen bc he said if it does people will be bumping other people out of positions so even if you are not laid off you might be moved to another school.
ANYONE ELSE HEAR ANYTHING?

No- but Bloomie and co want to end LIFO and frankly they do what the hell they want. So I wouldn't worry too much yet.

But they can't do this unless we get a new contract. We have to function under the old contract until we have a new one, which I have a feeling is not going to come for a while.

If they go around laying off at each school...how will that end up bumping teachers from one school to another?

Lay off's are NOT like excessing. It is Citywide--not based on school. So one school could have 16 laid off one school 50--the school with a lot of people with low senority
Someone downtown looks at a computer which shows everyone's time in system and they will layoff that way.

That is the way I thought that it was, but I got confused when you said they would go around to each department....

State Sen. Diaz is sponsoring a bill that would end LIFO. I will make a new post with a link to the Times article. I thought the same as you with regard to the contract, but apparently a contract isn't needed.
There will be bumping because some schools will lose more teachers than others. For example, I am in a school with very few new teachers. The school downstairs is staffed by 90% new teachers. So if LIFO remains the law of the land, other teachers will have to go fill those spots. Certain areas of the city will be more vulnerable than others because some districts have less turnover.

Our UFT rep said that there still is possible talk for a buy out option on the table.

I'm ing that all goes well for all of us. I'm smack in the middle...it could go either way for me depending on what they decide to do. I'd rather the buy out to save so many jobs!

What about for brand new schools?
My school is brand new...we are still ADDING grades (over the next two years).
What would happen in that instance?

Layoffs are CITYWIDE
So it will go based on senority
If teachers from your school are laid off bc they were last in (and as such first out) then they will be replaced by teachers who have more senority from others schools.
If they do this it will shake up every school in city....

Re: Layoffs NYC info from UFT meeting
How would this effect Special Education? I understand that it is citywide, but are they more likely to cut other subject areas as opposed to SpEd because SpEd is mandated and not everyone is able to teach it?

I just wanted to bump this last question. Anyone have any ideas about special education. (My DH is a special Ed teacher.) Thanks!

Re: Layoffs NYC info from UFT meeting
If they do away with LIFO it will be a disaster in the end for all teachers new and old.
Legally I do not think they can change it for teachers who are tenured into the system under one contract, I think we will be grandfathered into safety. However I imagine it could eventually effect the new teachers.
But what do I know

ITA. I don't know how legal it would be- but it seems that what Joel wants, Joel gets. I really feel for the people who'd be laid off (and I really hope it does not come to that.)
Going to share this link again- it's got the most recent news items too. FB page

Re: Layoffs NYC info from UFT meeting
My school would stand to lose 14 teachers at a minimum.....we have a lot of newer teacers with few years in. If that many get laid off then we take from neighboring schools and teachers will have no choice but to go and fill in where needed or lose their jobs.

Re: Layoffs NYC info from UFT meeting
not laid off unless a "fiscal emergency" is declared, which bloomberg has done.
