Le Leche League or any advice with colic babies
Has anyone called any of the Long Island ladies? I feel weird just calling one of them, I don't know why.
DD is totally colic and I'm not sure what to do and I'm THIS close to giving up BFing since obviously I'm the one giving her this AWFUL gas

Re: Le Leche League or any advice with colic babies
First, I've talked to a LLL leader, but she is out in Quogue. Second, you may very well not be causing the baby gas. My DS had so much gas from about week 3 to week 10. I cut out dairy and soy and caffeine for 3 weeks. It did nothing. The ped and the lactation consultant kept telling me it was just him, his immature digestive system, plus the way he gulps when he eats, and you know what they were right. At 10 weeks it went away. Oddly enough, we are now at week 12. And it's back, but not painful. I am back at work now, and during the day DS receives 3 bottles of pumped BM. He is getting gassy again b/c he is gulping down the bottles and getting air in. I would contact the LLL, but don't assume this is your doing. Good luck!

TY!
Her ped said the same thing, that's it's just her digestive system but that I could try to cut down on dairy but that he didn't think it would make a difference. (since she was gaining fine and her BMs were normal) I've cut down on dairy and it hasn't seem to help. I only have one cup of caffeine daily (should I cut that out too? that's my saving grace lol)
She does gulp as she BFs, is there anyway I can help her slow down?

Re: Le Leche League or any advice with colic babies
I don't know about LLL but I want to give you We are going through this too with our DD. I agree with PP, it may not have anything to do with your diet. Everything I'm reading and getting from others is that the majority of the time it is just an immature digestive system that they have to grow out of. I have cut out most foods that cause gas and cut back a lot on dairy but it made no difference at all. I have also read that babies gulp much less air when breastfeeding. Do you think she is gulping BM because she is very hungry or because too much milk is coming out? If it's the latter, you can express a little milk before she eats. Also, if you lean back when you feed her that should help. I had the same problem but it's better now.
I haven't found anything that has worked consistently with DD and we have tried everything. I am giving her probiotics in a pumped bottle of breast milk everyday. This seems to have helped some. We are also using Colic Calm which seems to also help. It's black and stains so be forewarned.
Maybe you can check with your Ped. about giving your DD probiotics and Colic Calm. The Probiotics take a couple of weeks to build up and start working.
I know, it's rough. I can't wait for my DD to grow out of it but I don't want to rush it because when she does, it will be time for me to go back to work

Re: Le Leche League or any advice with colic babies
I've never called but I read their book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding...it is def worth owning if you really want to bf...I reference it a lot.
Clearly this isn't medical advice and you could check with your Dr but it says in the book to first make sure the baby isn't crying bc they are hungry (they suggest feeding on demand, not schedule), and next try carrying the baby around with you/baby wearing to allow the gas to move around and out. They also suggest trying different positions to hold the baby (magic baby hold).
It also says "colic" could be due to oversupply or reflux or food allergies.
For oversupply you have to leave the baby on one side long enough for them to get the hindmilk.
For reflux and food sensitivity, I'd call the Dr, but if they suggest switching to formula I'd get another opinion.
My DD has a milk protein sensitivity so I've cut all dairy from my diet. It's fairly common.
Do not feel that YOU are causing her discomfort! You are giving her the best type I nourishment there is. Once you figure out why she is crying/gassy you can fix it & everything will be fine!
Oh, and have you tried Mylicon gas drops?

Re: Le Leche League or any advice with colic babies
Not sure if you saw my message but I will just c/p it here.
Im so sorry! Anthony was the same exact way. It got to the point where our families were like " there is something wrong with him". I kept going to the ped and he kept saying that it's gas and it will pass. Some of his symptoms were consistent with reflux (cried when he was flat on his back, arched his back when he cried, etc) so we put him on Zantac. It helped him but he was still gassy/colicky. Its such a tough stage to BF through but if you want to keep going, do it! I promise you it gets better!!!! At like 3 months a switch went on and it was gone. It's not what you're eating, it's just her sensitive belly. Do you think she could have mild reflux? Bring it up to her ped. Did you try Colic calm? Hang in there!! You're doing an awesome job!

To add to my story: I tried Mylicon- nothing, used Colic Calm- helped at that moment only. Brought up reflux and probiotics to ped- they didn't want to prescribe him meds b/c he is gaining so well (98th%.) Ped thinks I have an oversupply and told me to go on birth control. I don't think I do, as I don't pump huge amounts, but I do think I have a fast letdown. BUT I also think it is DS as he gulps his bottles and gets it too. The ped told me just wait till he gets to solids, he's going to be a mess. LOL. It's so hard b/c we don't like them to go through any pain, but I think the drs are really just looking at weight gain/health, knowing that everything else will resolve itself.

Re: Le Leche League or any advice with colic babies
I really had to cut out all dairy with DD until she was about 3 mos. She didn't seem as sensitive after that. She was also gassy if I ate brocolli, onions and tomato sauce. I never called any of the ladies from LLL but I hear they're very helpful. My go to book was the womanly art of breastfeeding, also kellymom.com is a very helpful website. If you've noticed your LO is sensitive to dairy I'd just cut it all out for a bit. Sometimes even a little is too much for them. HTH!! Hang in there, it will get better!
