I think it depends upon price. While we have a tablet it is not an ipad. I was able to get two leap pads for $70 each at Barnes and Nobel. How much is an ipad, $499. To me that is just to much to spend on a toy for a child. Other people might think that is reasonable. I don't know your budget or how old your DC is but I would need two of them and at $998 that is just to much for me to spend for one gift for each of my kids at this point. When they are older and need a computer for school I will sing a different tune.

We have an ipad and have had one for about a year.

My DC is 4, but I couldn't see buying a "toy" ipad. I think that even though they are way less expensive, you will also get way less use out of it.

But I also feel it is a very big gift for a little kid. Maybe as a "family" gift?

my kids each have an ipad they share and each have an itouch and DS, leapsters, mobis and other gadgets and they have gotten and hands down the itouch gets the most amount of use possible especially being that they can take it with them anywhere..

We love the itouch. My DS got it for his 3 birthday and it is great b/c it's so small he can take it anywhere by himself. Plus, it gets dropped often and with the hard case it holds up well not sure you can get a hard shell for the ipad and it's much cheaper.

Tablets are going to be like $50-$100 on black friday, so I would get a kid friendly case and go that route. I wouldn't go with an actual Ipad brand though...too much $$ for a kid. I personally think $100 is too expensive for what the leap pad does. At least a tablet they can grow with

I think if you have an android based tablet then you can use android based apps.

I got the leap pad for my 2yr old. I can't compare it to itouch etc since I don't have one and not familar with the apps etc. My son loves the video camera and camera features. and it has an art studio game which allows him to draw and color. I also got it for the ebooks and disney books like toy story and cars
